+1 --- I used it and it made a lot of difference!! thumb

Side imaging - for finding structure; down imaging to determine if there is fish on it! thumb
Correction - down imaging to see what's down there; and sonar to count the fish!

People also think of a water column as vertical. So why/how is the water column, which is vertical, displayed with the bottom, which is horizontal?
These questions are the #1 problem people have with interpreting the display. The good news is that after only a few minutes of coaching, people have the Ah ha! moment where everything clicks and they get it.
Probably the best example Ive seen of trying to explain Side Imaging was from professional guide Doug Vahrenburg. He recorded an excellent video of himself folding a print-out of an SI screen shot, showing how you should interpret the display. This explanation technique is now seen all over Humminbird promotional material. In essence, you fold a full-page print of the screen capture along the boat path (center), then back the other way where the sonar begins to paint the bottom. The result is a 3D depiction that is sufficient to comfort most people.

Thank you for the link, I watched it twice and I think I am getting closed to that ah-ha moment. Not quite there yet, but close. I love the explaination on the barge part.

it takes time, your looking at something your brain isnt used to. Over time, stdying the pics, it will start to click.

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

My son looked at me while looking at our SI screen. He asked me how to read it. I explained with the Peice of paper trick. He sat for a minute and points at the screen. He pointed at the line running through the middle of the screen and says I can explain that easier. He says the white line is the middle of the road. The water colum is what's under the boat (the road) and to the right and left are what on the side of the road. Kids are SMART.

Smart kid indeed. Kids can think outside of box much easier than we can. We are boxed in by years and years of experiences...

I'm trying. I have two boys one in first grade and one in second. They always amaze me. Looks like a road to me now that it's been brought to my attention. lol

Obviously both would be best, but if I had to give up something it would be DI.
Once I'm on fish and am "nit picking" a brush pile, then DI is really helpful.
I just think there are way more uses for SI
Scanning new water, it's irreplaceable!
You can scan a whole section of a lake in just a few hours, a small section even quicker. With time you'll learn to spot even the most subtle brush pile or stump, AND get it marked on GPS instantly. That's huge!
Checking every pilling on an entire bridge is a snap with SI, and you'll quickly be able to tell which ones are holding crappie.
Crappie don't always hold right on the cover your fishing. Many times they are off on the peripheral of the "spot" you're fishing. The SI will help you spot those suspended fish.
The list goes on and on but like I said, if I had to pick just one it would be SI.

Of course, I'll never do without either ever again. smile

I've watched several of Dougs videos. Never seen that one until now. I thought i understood how to interpret SI but that video cleared up all my confusion. Now if I could just learn how to get my setting right so I can use it the right way
