As far as crappie fishing goes, what would be more beneficial to crappie fishing? Side imaging or down imaging.

I personnaly find down imaging easier to read. I have watched quite a few YouTube videso on side imaging but I still have problem visualizing what is displayed. Does anyone have any good link on explaning how to interpreting side imaging?

I think on the TFF there is extensive info under the general equipment threads. There are also many on YouTube and the manufacturers websites.

I would rather have both grin

I think I'd really enjoy side image because it shows you shadows . That really makes the image come alive. Also, you can cover a lot bigger area with SI.

No link, but in open water I only use my SI to locate structure or channels. what I look for are shadows. The shape and length of the shadow speaks volumes.
The only time I let SI tell me when fish are there is at bridge pylons. The fish are easy to see if they are next to the pylon especially if you speed up your screen but keep your boat speed at around 3 mph.

For me side imaging is more important than down imaging. I've caught allot of crappie due to side imaging that were not in any brush tops but suspended off to the side.

Try reducing your scale to 40'-50' on each side of the boat or less. It is much easier to mark a location if your not trying to analysis 300' of data at a time. As you become familiar with the screens generated, increase the amount of distance that shows on your screen.

Keep in mind the greater the scale, the smaller the fish will appear on the screen.

I bought down imaging in 2012 as I thought it would be all I need. And it is but it is not all I want. roflmao

So I am about to buy a HB 899 SI so I will have both. I will place the SI on the console to help locate places to fish and move the DI on the bow to use with the trolling motor.

Hopefully I will enjoy the difference enough that SI makes to justify the additional cost of SI instead of just buying a bigger DI for the console.

^^^ This ^^^

Found a nice & big brush pile in between 2 stumps on Fork once. I fished the front and in the brush itself but got nothing. As I got ready to leave and ran across it again, I saw a clump of fish ...suspended to the side/back of the pile. Stop, drop a jig ...Thump!!! Caught a dozen solid fish off of there.

The most common question people have when they first see Side Imaging is what am I looking at? You see what appears to be the bottom, but if youre supposed to interpret the display as if you were looking vertically down at the bottom, then why is there an edge to the bottom? Is that the top? People also think of a water column as vertical. So why/how is the water column, which is vertical, displayed with the bottom, which is horizontal?
These questions are the #1 problem people have with interpreting the display. The good news is that after only a few minutes of coaching, people have the Ah ha! moment where everything clicks and they get it.
Probably the best example Ive seen of trying to explain Side Imaging was from professional guide Doug Vahrenburg. He recorded an excellent video of himself folding a print-out of an SI screen shot, showing how you should interpret the display. This explanation technique is now seen all over Humminbird promotional material. In essence, you fold a full-page print of the screen capture along the boat path (center), then back the other way where the sonar begins to paint the bottom. The result is a 3D depiction that is sufficient to comfort most people.

Youtube is a very useful tool in learning about side imaging. I didnt have the money to hire a guide and didnt want to wait for a dvd in the mail. I watched the Doug V. video and even played it again on my phone while i was on the lake. There is also an awsome thread at the top of the crappie section that says "post your graph pictures here." A lot of questions and answers are there and its a wealth of knowledge for a beginner on the si di technology.

Side imaging is for finding cover/structure, Down Imaging is to see if it's loaded with crappie :-)

David, I don't know where Doug V got his idea about folding the paper, but Ernest Paty gave a seminar at a CAT meeting showing us that method years ago as well as a follow up presentation or two later. This was back in SI's infancy. Ernest displayed it on a video screen and had a hard copy sample. It was effective.

Run lowrance.....I side image at 50ft or 60 ft until I see fish. I mark and can go back over with downscan or just fish for them. Lot of time on the water. DO NOT keep playing with the side scan because the scale is so different. Pretend you have a flashlight and point to the left or right......basic concept of the sidescan. If you play around long enough on sidescan you can even tell how far off the bottom the fish are without going back over with downscan. Dr. Sonar is the videos to purchase for Lowrance HD. Ford vs Chevy on the debate who is better. Either way get on the water and play. I drive around for hours some days if I lose the fish from previous trips. The electronics have changed the game.

I have seen the concept from Doug V in other presentations. Lot of this is visual concept for our brains to realize what your looking at. Keep studying and burn some fuel on the pond.

+1 --- I used it and it made a lot of difference!! thumb

Side imaging - for finding structure; down imaging to determine if there is fish on it! thumb
