Rick Clunn has never been rude, or failed to offer advice or answer questions, to anyone wanting to learn (provided he had the time). Also, he was the original "fast, power fisherman", that everyone was chasing. Zell Rowland told me one time, "there are two kinds of baits, ones made to throw "in" a bush, and ones to throw "beside" a bush. If a fellow fishin' with me throws one made for beside a bush, in it... he better have a bunch of 'em, I ain't goin' after it, the time that takes, Clunn will have thrown it 50 more times than me!"

I am not sure what I was expecting to read when I opened this thread but Indian proverbs were not one of them. I enjoyed it. I totally agree with RC. He was just on The Bass Pros talking about technology being a compliment to your game. I just wish I could apply it a fraction as good as he can. Does anyone even try to locate fish without electronics?

The Rick Clunn Anglers Quest material was way out there.

Looks like he authored a book in the late 70s and produced a VHS instructional--both out of print, but available on amazon

Clunn is one of the greatest fishermen ever, yes he is a little different. Winning the Classic is like winning the Super Bowl, winning the AOL is like the MVP, I will take the Classic all day long over the AOL, which one pays the most money ? I went to one of Clunn's seminars several years ago, he was really good.

I like Denny Brauer much better as an "old school" fisherman

Slade, this one not written by Clunn but he is one of the main characters of a book back in 1988 called "Bass Wars" by Nick Taylor. Pretty interesting read if you are looking for old school behind the scenes account of high stakes fishing in the 1980s. Got to spend a couple of days with him at Okeechobee that year. A very interesting man and perspective on the sport. He could get five or six bites out of an area most anglers could entice only one or two. Presentation was and is the key.

Clunn was also featured in a older Team Daiwa promotional video of their pros, including Denny, Larry and a few others... Dated, but still a good video. Only on VHS as far as I know.
Also in a few of Glen Lau's videos, and one from the Minnesota Mining Corp, oddly enough... "Bass Fishing Top to Bottom with Ricky Clunn" All of these from the 80's maybe early 90's.
Surprised BPS hasn't done something with RC, he's been with them for a while and they put out a lot of sponsored pro's Vids, ie KVD, Nixon, Woo Davies, Stacy King, etc...

I went to a seminar back around '86. Rick Clunn gave an hour long presentation. One of the questions he answered was why he didn't have all the patches on his shirt (old school) like some of the other pro's. He said "how much money is enough?". Sounds like he was already financially set back them.
He was all about seasonal patterns, map study, reviewing past tournament history. In other words, he was pretty analytical even back then.

The Rick Clunn Anglers Quest material was way out there. No Joke! I've read most of the stuff he has written. Not taking anything away from his skills on the water but still a weird dude. In one article he wrote, he said he had such an awesome practice in a Bassmaster event that he called his wife and told her to make sure she was at the weigh in because he would win it hands down... He went on to say that he BLANKED three days in a row in that event!

Question: Would Rick Clunn still dominate today like he did back then (if he was in his youth) in today's tournament pro circuit?
I say NO.

With the success of junior and collegiate tournaments producing a growing number of great anglers and a higher level of competition, I think it will be more and more rare for a single pro to dominate.

He is also on Bass Pros Season 7 videos.
The Top to Bottom is a good video. I have several hundred VHS videos and there are only slight difference in techniques from 80-90s to today.
