I sure this has been posted before, but I was unable to locate anything using the search feature......
So, without going into too much detail, over the course of this weekend I managed to drop both of my reels in the water (freshwater) by accident. I thought they would be fine after they dried out but now when I cast they both make a horrible screaming noise. I have taken them apart and lubed them with super lube, but I must not be getting it into the right places because its still screaming when I cast. Both reels are Quantum Accurist ACS II PT.
Do you guys have any idea which bearing I need to be lubing? Or at least offer some suggestions on what I should do to get them back the way they were? (And dont say "keep them out of the water" either!!)
I just order the special Quantum Hot Sauce oil and grease, so when that arrives I'll be diving back into them hopefully armed with some better knowledge of what I am doing.
Many Thanks,

Spray WD-40 into the reels because it will penetrate into places that you cannot lube as easily. Then wipe it all down and relube.

DO NOT use WD-40! All the rod/reel boards that I frequent, and the professional shops agree that this stuff is the worst thing you can do to a reel! It's a decent cleaner, but not a good lubricant. If you use it, you'll want to get ALL of it out of the parts. It will gum up over time.
Shoot connie at LakeForkTackleRepair an email. She is now a Shimano only shop, but I used her back when I had Quantum reels. She might know. Her email is reellady@peoplescom.net
Another contact to try would be Sandman2002. I'll come back and edit, with his email address.

It was one reel on saturday and one sunday! I managed to knock the one I wasnt fishing with overboard, twice!! Just so you dont think im a complete moron, I fish from a one person inflateable pontoon boat at a lake that does not allow motor boats. Here is a picture of the boat. So its easier than it sounds to get them wet. It is however the first time this has happened since I got the boat at the beginning of the summer. What luck, two in one weekend. You need to stop using them until you clean the dirt/grime out of them. There is probably one grain of sand somehwere against the spool. I would take it to a professional reel specialist if you can't get them to stop making the noise. I ruined a Calcutta from doing the same thing!

Be advised that WD-40 is not a lubricant. You will be sorely disappointed when it eventually dries out and your reel doesn't want to function. I learned the hard way on a shotgun back in my Jr High days. I would disassemble and dry with a blow dryer then oil with reel oil. Good Luck! ------------------

WD-40 stands for Water Displacement #40.

WD-40 will penetrate to break up and remove rust and displace the water, that is why it works good for situations like that. I was not recommending it as a lubricant, which is why I recommended cleaning off the WD-40 and relubing.

Brent...You are fortunate! My 5500C (had for 25 years) and an expensive rod went overboard this past summer and I still plan on retrieving it! The culprit was a very reputable rod holder system that I was using and as I swung around a point my hellbender hung up and the entire rod holder broke off tumbling into the lake, rod, reel, et al.
I just had to reply, as I thought that I was the only dork who loved to fish. If we cannot laugh at ourselves, we have no right to laugh at others! Let me elaborate....
Last year I hit the waters with my new Ranger. I had my life jacket lying beside my leg, (instead of around my body) and jumped out of the water with my 200 Mercury. Gosh, it was exhilirating! I stopped at a cove and fished for 20 minutes, then prepared to leave. I looked down for my life jacket (color coordinated to match boat) $60!!! GONE! I quickly retraced my route. Saturday morning....are you kidding? Some lucky boater had a new vest. I told my wife about it and swore to her that I would not run the lake without wearing my life jacket again.
Later that spring I was back on the same lake. Knowing that my glasses were loose, I had the bright idea (give me a small break, I am 59 years YOUNG) I took them off and put them in the velcro locking pocket of my NEW life jacket. Yup, $60. Later that morning, I saw jumps come up about 200 yards from where I was fishing. I quickly lifted the trolling motor, raced toward the surfacing fish, who dove beneath the surface before I could get to them. Since I was already heading in a new direction, I continued to run approximately a mile up the lake.
Yup, you guessed it. Talk about feeling like the dumbest angler on the lake. Life vest number 2 ($120)....I turned around halfway praying that it would be floating in the middle of the lake. NOPE....some thief had picked it up from the water, knowing that I had lost it! Remember the glasses? Yup...gone.
If it didn't hurt so bad, I would laugh. I called the docks around the lake to ask them if they had anyone turn in the jacket. Guess what they told me? "Are you serious? Do you actually think someone would turn in a brand new, first class life jacket if they found one"? Hmmmmm, never thought of that. Live and Learn. I ALWAYS put on my life jacket now....even at home, while washing the boat!!!!!

Speaking of Sunglasses, I was fishing on RayBob a few years back with a buddy of mine. He had on his prescription glasses, and took them off at daybreak to put on prescription sunglasses. He puts them in the soft case, and puts it in his shirt pocket. Not less than two minutes later, he sets the hook and gets the fish to the boat. As he bends over to lip the fish...you guessed it...the prescription glasses fall out, hit the gunwale, and drop into about 25 foot of water! I'm on the front deck and can't decide whether to laugh or cry! I decided to play it safe, and let out a big ol' "Aww [censored] Man! That's awful!" I also learned the hard way years ago, that while running down the lake with very light sunglasses and no strap, you don't turn your head to the side! Glasses flew off, and out of the boat. No amount of luck in world would have let me find them! KD
