Making money in retail is no easy task. Nobody will be renting or buying kayaks in the middle of winter, but you still have to pay rent.

Keep in mind Bass Pro Shops USED to be a Hobie dealer. They simply were not up to snuff handing customer service and got their dealership yanked.
Also do enough diligence to discover that the margin on different brands varies a lot and the larger margins do not come from the manufacturers you would guess.
That being said, if you have a very, very good location, a favorable real estate situation with a long term advantage, the stomach to work retail ( pretty much 24/7 if you are doing rental) and a very understanding family unit, it sounds like a hoot.
Best of luck ! Phill

ocean n old town r more Affordable for everyone. As mentioned they r proven in the sport. Dont know how they work as far as warranty. Everything ive had of theirs worked right. Both also make stable tandem crafts Couldnt u buy other brands and rent them? I think your customers will tell u what they like. A few IAs by hobie will certainly get u noticed. If u Treat people right, good things will happen. Id get much advise from successful folks. Do your homework. Work on making & maintaining strong business relationships. Relationships r key. Every successful person ive ever met had drive and the RIGHT vision. The most successful people ive met know how to treat people and are up beat. Dont let anyone out work u.

Since the lot is near the city park. I plan on having a snow cone stand. Plus the city has invested money and installed frisbee golf course. RV park is being built so I would also maybe have a kitchen and sell hamburgers. I'm not trying to be a Austin city kayak. More like a place you can rent kayak, buy fishing gear, bring your kids to get snow one before or after a day at the park.

So maybe buying several different brands of yaks to rent Is the way to go? Rentals Initially, rental sales later? Hobie jackson ocean & ws all build nice yaks with comfy seats for your patrons. If ur customers r gonna fish out of them youll need both recreational and angler yaks. Probably sell a bunch after the word got out being on the water. Best of luck to u.
