What an experience. I learned two things today, how to catch crawfish and how to properly put them on my hook to catch white bass. I missed so many fish before figuring it out. It was a learning curve for sure. Not a good day, but ok. End the day with 12 on crawfish and 4 more on jigs. Left them biting, got to dang cold. And I do not want to go back outside to clean them, but I have no choice. At least Ill be out of the wind though. The bite for me has slowed down, dont know what its going to take to get limit. I can see plenty of fish, I just cant find what they want and how they want it. But it was a fun day, learned a few new tricks, so its all good.
Oh, I also saw fishingfool40 and called out his name several times, but he never did answer me back. Watched him pull one out of the drink. I have heard of using crawfish. So how did you end up putting them on your hook?

I think I would rather eat the Crawfish, forget the White Bass. I agree. I like them fried, or boiled. I told my wife last night that a good wife would clean these fish, she told me, a good husband would quit bringing them home. LOL Freezer is getting pretty full. Might have to go to the catch and release only from here on out. It is more fun, that's for sure. I'll use my counter to keep up with my catch. Other wise I can't remember after I reach like seven or eight. I use it now so I don't end up with more than what is allowed. It's like a two hundred dollar fine for every small fish, or fish over your limit. Not worth the fine at all. No mistakes allowed......

If the bite was just a little better than it has been in the last two trips, I would have gone today, cold or not. Oh well, maybe this cold front will slow the spawn down. It was going crazy there for a little while. A lot of these fish have been spawning. I would see them doing this every afternoon. But there are plenty of females still full of eggs, so this year's spawn is still going to go on strong for a while.
Due to doctor appointments and so forth, I will not be able to hit the creek again for some time. Errr. Oh well, time to take a little break. I am going to see my back surgeon tomorrow.

Fished the WMA above Irwin from noon till 2:00 today picked up 6 downstream from the shoot. Got a gnarly backlash from an overhead limb so called it a short day. Unless the roads are iced I'm going back tomorrow...Lawton

The shoot, that is a good name for it. Everyone else calls it the watre fall. But it is more like a shoot than a water fall. Neat to watch the whites swim up that shoot. Some good crappie in the hole it dumps into.

I watched closely for about 20 minutes and never saw a white run up the shoot, and that is why I decided to not travel any further upstream. But then again maybe me standing so close dressed out in orange had them watching me, as I was looking for them...Lawton

The water is super clear over there. I checked it out a few days a go and decided it was way to clear. You had to find them in the deep pockets and that limited the amount of strike zones, plus its a long walk back with a full stringer. But it is beautiful place and youre not fighting the crowd.

Sounds like a cool place. That's definitely an area I need to explore a little more. As it is right now, I 'm a lot more familiar with the area around Newman's Bottom and downstream from there to the lake. There was really only one year I fished the area around Irwin Bridge.

Are yall buying crawfish at the store now that they're in season and using for bait? You just hook through the tail, cast in a hole and wait? Never heard of using them on whites. I can't get out for another two weeks. Hopefully they'll still be in the creek and I'll try my luck one more time.

The run typically lasts through March, although each year is a little different depending on water level, weather, etc. The unique thing about the Somerville creeks is that Hybrids will start mixing in with the White Bass, usually towards the end of the run. Hook into one of those and you'll know it.
