I wanted a jig that I could still add a skirt to in what ever color pattern I wanted and have a center point screw lok in the place of the weed guard so that I could use my soft plastic as the weed guard. The screw lok swings free so that on the bite it will collapse under the bite leaving the open hook that is skin hooked. I like the excite craws because they float up. With this jig, the claws are free to float up when the jig is stopped but when I drag it, the skirt still provides action and bulk and looks like a bunch of legs running backwards. Anyway, that was my goal. Let me know if it was just a waste of time or if you think it will work.
Thanks CW

I would call it a Texas Football Head Rig. Sell millions and retire!

I like the colors. Hook sets (hook-ups) should be fine with the swinging screw lock. I see this rig as being similar to a large size shakey head, but with a skirt added and the screw lock not molded into the head. I have no doubt these jigs will catch bass.

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

So far I have made them in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 oz. Cabelas in Buda had these football heads with weed guards on sale in the bargan cave for 5 jigs for $1.90 so I bought around 45-50 in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, & 3/4. They had the worst paint on them ever so I soaked them in acetone then the paint just wiped off. Took a pair of pliers and pulled the weed guards out and drilled the holes a little deeper. Made me some stainless wire loops and set them in the holes with epoxy. Finally powder coated and tempered in the oven. I know, it was a lot of trouble but look outside, what else did I have to do. Got about 15 more to do tonight.

Thanks guys, makes me feel better. I was hoping that I wasn't doing something that had been done before and was a bad idea.

C Worthy... I think you have a winner! I'd throw them around any kind of cover and hang on. Excite baits are awesome.... Shhhhhh don't tell anybody about them being a great jig trailer!
