do you feel guilty when you don't practice 100%? seems like I can find a hundred excuses not to practice 100% like fishing is for fun, not feeling well, the weather, already know how you will be fishing, and not practicing always gives you an excuse for not doing well. although I may have several excuses, I still feel guilty. the only tournament I won I didn't practice and there have been several I practiced days for a 1 day tournament and didn't do well. does practice for tournaments not have as much direct correlation as many other sports how well you do?

Defiantly not as much correlation as other sports. But obviously it plays a large role in many tournaments. I feel you Rob in the winter and early spring when the bite can be tough it's sometimes hard to grind out a 8-10hr practice day especially when you may not be fishing all day but just graphing. I find it easier to practice alone when I practice with my partner or a buddy I seem to loose a little focus.

The tournaments that I have been most successful in I've have not practiced for. I don't know why, maybe having an open mind or less pressure on myself. I still feel guilty for not prefishing or do my homework. It drives me crazy because my wife always calls me out on it.

I had My best tournaments last season when I didn't prefish. I mainly just graph a lot of water. Other than one person I have to go out alone to graph. My friends who don't tournament fish like I do, want to catch fish as where I just want to locate fish and not mess with them. But I'm no pro so maybe I'm wrong...

I have zero natural ability. I have learned the hard way that unless I spend a ton of time on the water I usually fail miserably. I do not necessarily have to be on the tournament lake fishing just on the water and fishing in general every chance I get. The last two years due to life and other commitments I was not on the water near as much and it showed. So far this year I have changed that. I am back to fishing every chance I get and then some. Plan on keeping that up. Its the only way I do any good,

I feel better when I practiced even if practice sucked, believe it or not. Got it in my head that I don't deserve a chance if I didn't practice. Always been that way even in other sports

I've had my best success when I practice and find fish. I know where to go and what to throw. I have been lucky a couple of times without any but don't really care to fly by the seat of my pants. On the other hand, I've been out to Fork the past month pretty regular and for some reason she has kicked my butt.

The problem with a successul practice is if the fishing changes, for whatever reason, then changing from a successful "day before pattern" is tough. When you don't prefish, you do approach the current weather and lake patterns with an open mind.
That's my take on it anyway.
When I prefish, I don't lock down on a pattern, I graph and learn structure in the lake. Most times I have the barb of the hook flattened. Sometimes I'll fish with no hook at all. I just want to find fish. And not yank good fish out.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.

The best thing for me is the off-limits time. It keeps me from burning my fish. Other then that it is practice and locate. One tournament in particular found a bite that was a time of day thing. They moved into an area between 12-2 and no other time would not have found this except for practicing. Won the tournament.
FISHING NOW NOT WORKING ANYMORE

I'm with Mark. Doesn't have to be on the lake your tourney is on but you do need to be on the water to stay sharp.

Good one..LOL.. For me practice is a luxury now a days.. There is no replacement for shear time on the water, if you want to be consistant (anywhere) rule 1... you have put your time in.. I had a person tell me that a long time ago, never really took it to heart. One day with the right partner(my wife) it all clicked and it was on like Donkey Kong. Hot Hot Hot, we were out there, freezing azz cold 15-19' degrees in competition like the Classic tomorrow..We were there, and had great success for 4+ yrs. We only waivered when health issues kept us off the water, absolutely practice makes perfect so the saying goes.. It don't always have to be so dang serious, try to have fun and win the game between you and the fish, not the other anglers, and success will come your way. The greatest feeling in a bass tournament is mixing winning, money, and fellowship with my fellow competitors. We've made some great friends on the trails we've fished, and a few enemies I imagine too... But, it was all good.

I generally practice to try and develop a few productive patterns and "types" of water that will be productive during the tourney.
This time of year with the unstable weather, I feel like practice is often a waste of time. But, I still try and go and have a good positive attitude. But when the wind chill is in the 20's like it was this morning at Fork, the older I get the more I think I might rather be inside, lol...
