I am deciding on a future boat to pursue. I am wondering about the difference between these 19-20 foot boats while fishing in the wind. The avg weight I've found for 19ft boats is 1600 while the 20ft boats are around 1900. Is it a noticable difference when the wind is up in the 20's or 30's? How much will the boats get shoved/swung around? What are your experiences in your boats and what wind will you/can you tolerate?

I have found it has more to do with hull design then weight. I had a Z522 2012 ranger that would almost stay put in a 25 MPH wind with the boat looking straight into the wind. The Ranger was 22'4" long and weight 1940 pounds. I have a Phoenix that is 21'6" that weights 1950 pounds. The Phoenix gets push around in the wind a little more then the ranger, even tho it out weights the Ranger by 10 pounds. The Phoenix I believe as other qualities that do better then the Ranger but for this post I don't believe weight is what holds the boat in the wind. I don't believe their is a better boat for a fishing platform for fishing it the wind then a Ranger. I just believe their is a lot of good boat company that do a lot of things better then other companies. just my .02

The wind is an issue whether the boat is 19' or 20' long. A good strong 24 volt trolling motor is important here. I would get the biggest boat you can afford, tow, and store. Also consider where you fish most of the time. I've had a couple of 20' boats and the extra room to move around and storage is great. But I found that I prefer the 18'-19' boats for where I fish and the ease of putting it in the garage. When the wind blows over 20 mph, it's a challenge in all of them.

Amen on that. I have an 18' rig and thankfully a great MinnKota 24V 72lb TM. But still, the wind can always be a problem. Listen to this mans advice. If the wind is blowing that dang hard I try and get out of it! I did however just buy a new Minnkota Fortrex with a 52 in shaft just for fishing in those big wave windy days...

Get the boat you like and put a 80 lb 24v or 101 36v MK Terrova w/ anchor lock on the boat and you don't have to worry about being pushed around. if you are on the go fishing stumps or shallow it doesn't matter what you have you'll still have wind issues. I have an 18.5ft Skeeter w/ the Terrova and I love fishing in the wind. That's when the fish really bite.

52" shaft, fill the livewells and the gas tanks and go at it.

You're gunna get blown around in either if the winds really getting it. Another thing to consider is hull design. Do you want a faster hull that will rock more when sitting still? Or more stable that doesn't go quite as fast? It comes down to your preference. A 19' bassCat is gunna ride different than a 19' skeeter. Ride in as many as you can and good luck.

Great info guys thank you, so if I am looking for stability and don't need to go 70+ any ideas? A wider beam boat? Of the top of your heads do you know which boats have hulls built for stability not built for pure speed? And not new boats if they've changed their styles. Looking more for 2000-2009ish used

Chargers are known for their rough water ride and stability more popular up north on the big rough lakes.

I think a Ranger really sits in the water nicely, I think the boats that sit high in the front catch a lot of wind, they usually run a lot faster.

My rig seems a stable platform to fish from but, when under power in winds above 15mph, it is going to be a wet ride. But, honestly I attribute most of this to my lack of 'boat handling skills'. There, I said it. Just being totally honest. The hull design I believe I am told is based upon the old Champion line that was bought by Stratos years ago. Maybe, IDK, a 20' rig would handle better in the same winds....with the same hull design. I'm just not sure. I know I do my best to avoid 15 to 20 mph winds if I can at all costs. Going to be a wet ride God Bless
