Okay so I am thinking about buying a gently used 12 foot tandem kayak for $150 off of Craigslist. The only problem I have is that the back of my pickup is a little less than 8ft long with the tailgate down. Is it okay for 1/3 of the kayak to be sticking out of the back? Will I have to mount it on top of my pickup? How can I do that? Is there another way I could put it in the bed of my pickup?

You'll need an extinsion. It plugs into a hitch

1/3 hanging off probably wont damage a thick kayak especially if it's only for short trips. To be on the safe side I would recommend a bed extender.
