Hobie PA 14 and I am wanting to go the fishfinder route. I am considering the Lowrance Elite-5 CHIRP. Is the mapping/chartplotting a necessary function for a pleasure only fisherman? Seems to me it would be a useless feature for me. I tend to fish small lakes and don't go too far from home. What say you about the Elite-5 choice and the chartplotting feature?

I have a Humminbird 597ci HD DI with navionics maps, and I do enjoy maps. If the lake is big enough for a PA 14 it is big enough for maps.
RealBigReel I don't go too fast but I go pretty far.

Gps is definitely worth having. Even without the maps, you can mark where you find structure, and go right back to it next time.

along this same line, mounting the transducer inside with silicone hasn't worked. what is the problem? does the unit need to be set up for shooting thru the hull?

It is probably an installation issue. If you have ANY bubbles int he silicone, the signal will be messed up. Also you might have to cut back on the sensitivity slightly. You should not have to do anything to the unit to use it through hull. Good luck. Phill

I agree, get the GPS. However, if you have a smart phone that is waterproofed somehow, the Navionics fishing app can be a decent GPS resource. It may be good enough with the limited use that you plan for. If I find I really good spot, sometimes I'll just take a pic of the fish finder from my phone using the app as a future reference point. This is especially handy when I am surveying a creek or river by kayak that I later plan to fish on foot.

Thank you all. I did order the Elite-5 Chirp Fishfinder Chartplotter. Will be here tomorrow for installation. (Then I have to learn how to use it. Never played with fishfinder before.)
