I will be on Mustang Island for a month starting today.(02/03/2015) I LOVE Flounder, redfish, an well, anything I can have fun with catching. I have two heavy catfish rods with 21# line on them and my bass fishing rods. I need lots of help as I will be on my own, shore fishing. Sheeps head would be good as well as Whiting, I love to eat whiting. It is raining so I will be on here most of the day as well as every morning as long as we are here. Any help with having fun while we are here is good to know. Thanks, Larry

whiting should be readily available in the surf. If you use bait, get some fresh dead shrimp on a carolina type rig using your bass tackle. No need for the heavy stuff for the whiting. Use at least a half ounce weight for distance casting. Another good bait that stays on a hook pretty well is shrimp flavored fishbites on the same type of rig. It comes as strips. Just cut off about an inch and thread it onto the hook.
Good luck.

Any help with having fun while we are here is good to know. Thanks, Larry For the two species you mentioned if the surf is not too rough and sandied up, fish there for Whiting, Caldwell and bob hall pier, Port A south Jetty, fish pass and Packery jetties all give better access to surf without getting wet. Fish a lighter rod and use freshest dead shrimp or shrimp flavor Fishbites. Can also expect to catch Bl or R drum, and possibly Pompano as well. For Sheepies any structure; jetty rocks, pier pilings, bulkheads, etc can hold sheepies. Fresh shrimp, crab, etc, will work. Small strong hook under a float real close to the structure can work well. Look up Lemon rig if you want the best way to feel their lite bite with a float. Lots of folks fish for sheepies this time of the year. Other than whiting, sheepies, both drum species, and possibly croaker and Pompano, if you want to target trout or reds in the bay you're going to need to mostly wade and grind to find the fish right now. Good Luck

Good advice, I might add that if the wind is out of the west, that's a good time to hit the surf.
Strong SE winds before a front, wade fishing a good spot can yield a nice stringer of fish.

Take your bass skills and adapt to the bay, bottom cover, grass lines and pot holes, all are basically the same as taking a lake apart looking for predators.
Top waters, jerk baits, will all work on what you're really wanting to catch in the bay or surf, trout, reds and flounder. Drowning a piece of meat will catch more of what you don't want than what you do.

If you've ever fished a river for bass, then apply a little current knowledge to fishing structure as well. Also, just about anything that catches a bass will catch reds and trout. bouncing the bottom with grubs will catch your flounder. have fun t

The first salt water fish I ever caught was on an old Texas rigged plastic worm off the South Jetty. Don't get worked up about it being the ocean, predator fish act pretty similar everywhere.

X2 on what Pat said, its all about edges and ambushing prey (Fritz 423). Many of us either were, or are bass fisherman who have crossed over, or are now hybrids. You are now in the Mecca for Gulfcoast SW fishing. I was there the end of last month. Depending on where you are there are likely some wading opportunities, hit up some of the tackle shops (Roy's in Corpus would be a good start), drive around along the bayside and look for people wading. If your open to it and have some waders that opens up a tremendous amount of opportunity. The guys at Roys can hook you up with what you need or you can get it all at Academy.
