So as yall all know, I left a while back to per sue my childhood dream to be the greatest merkin model there has ever been. Although I will always remember those years fondly, I felt it was time to head home to east texas, and chase the lucrative pay, and 9-5 work week that comes with full time guidin. I hit town late Friday and the buzz of the guide tournament was electric, so I called long time client Bobby Joe Thibaduex and told him we could win this thang, cuz they were lettin us turn in pictures of the slot fish! He drove over and met me early at Oakridge. I had been sleeping in my truck, which i had parked on the ramp, and was awaken by Lake Fork Guide Brukes Rodgers, blairin his horn at me! I thought we were in East Texas and people were polite, but I guess things have changed, and Mr Rodgers let me know I was back in his neighborhood. We ran up and decided to grab a quick bite, and got on the water around 9.
We decided to start up in little caney, but the spot I was counting on was 20 yds up the BANK high and dry. At this point, I realized the rumors of Lake Fork being dead were in fact true. We started heading out and had planned to head to Falcon to stalk the majestic and elusive gar, when we seen this kid in a blue skeeter settin hard on what appeared to be a 7.94# black beauty. No big deal, but he started singing a beautiful version of the Bill Monroe classic Blue Moon of Kentucky, so we shut her down to watch and listen. I couldn't tell what he was throwing but it looked like a Spook, and I was going to throw that anyway so i did. I proceeded to find a very active group of eaters and caught several fish in the 7.96-7.97 range. With each, I practiced (as the rules stated) CPR, catch Polaroid, release. We continued fishing there for a while alternating between Spooks and LFT Frogs in various colors, then headed to what would the best spot of the day
When we got to the back of Searcy, there he was again, that Broox Rogers. Now I want yall to know we had prefished on Thurs. and nobody was in that pocket but us. Now on Derby day it looked like a boat show in Dallas Market hall. We tolt that rodgers guy to getonoutayeeer these is our waters, and he put that minkota on 112 lbs and skeedadled. Thats when the basswhooping began. We musta caught between 20 and 40 largemouths in the next 30 minutes. All on Mister Twister Phennomey sumnomee Crawls on a Santone 1 3/4 oz finesse jigs on 3# sunline paired with a Dorbyns 866 flopin stick. I know that it sounds like a crazey approach but somethin about that fast fall in a foot of water that causes a reaction bite like you aint never seen.
I was gettin worried as we had bought all 9 cartridges of polaroid film at Oakridge, and we had burned through 8 packs, already, and the good bite hadn't started yet. We hightailed up to Axtons road bed to do a little flippin and caught so many i could't count that high, I lost track after 3. All of a sudden low and behold, you guessed it Mr Rodgers comes past me on plane and shuts ugly ole Skweeter down not 10yds from me. That was the last straw, so I proceed to take my Viper XP jig which caught at least all of them fish and sling it at their boat! A little wake up call, but What happened next made we want to quit fishing entirely. We all know the unwrtitten rule, that if you steal another mans water, you have the right to hurl your 1oz Viper XP in summer shad directly at said offenders melon, I mean come on man, we've all done it! But by no means does said offender have the right to cut your 30lb Yo-Zuri, hybrid line and steal your bait, well he did! I even heard that thats what him and those 2 knuckleheads used to catch all their fish with. Anyway I needed some time to cool down, so we headed in so we would be there at 4 to turn our polaroids in!
When we got to Coffee Creek for the weigh in there was nobody there. Hell we couldnt even get to the ramp there werent no water. So if any of yall know the adress to mail our Polaroid Pitchures i would appreciate it. I m pretty sure we won the Derby.
Yee Yee!
