I was given permission to fish a new pond this week. It was stocked with bluegill, hybrid sunfish and bass (with a few trophy bass thrown in). The owner feeds the fish. The first couple of times I fished the pond I was focused on catching bluegill. I tried several different sizes and colors of woolly buggers, nymphs, bead head flies and Briminators. Ultimately, the Briminator pattern in size 10 produced the best and I was catching bluegill on almost every cast.

In has been a fantastic week with temperatures even getting up into 80s one day. So I went back out and fished the pond again today. I started with a size 8 chartreuse briminator and caught a trophy sized sunfish, a couple of bass and a couple of bluegill. I then changed to a size 10 briminator pattern in black and caught a couple of bass, The biggest was 17" and 2.4 lbs. I caught a couple of bluegill on the black but it wasn't as good as the day before when I was using an olive and black pattern. So I changed to a size 10 olive pattern and started catching bluegill on every single cast. I caught them until I got bored. I tried bass fishing with a lot of different flies but only caught a couple of bass on a large feather bait fish pattern. Nothing on craw fish, streamers or clousers. I finally just grabbed the rod with the olive briminator and went back to catching bluegill on every single cast until my elbow said ENOUGH!!! GOTTA LOVE THE BRIMINATOR

All I can say is, agreed, the briminator!

I posted a thread in the Bluegill/Sunfish section called Bluegill & Sunfish. I posed a question to the TFF about the behavioral patterns and fishing techniques of the different species of sunfish and bluegill. Jagg posted some incredible information in the thread. The big thing I didn't know was that bluegill feed upward like a crappie. So I took that information and started experimenting with the sink rate of different flies. The size 10 Briminator was perfect. I could keep it suspended above the weedline and still be able to move it at an extremely slow pace.

Very good information and a nice catch to boot...

The Briminator is my go to fly, especially in creek settings, and I have used and caught trout on it as well.

Nice work! I just love fishing for Bluegills. I have never used Briminators but you have me sold on them already. May have to tie up some Briminators for carp also.

It's just such a simple tie that can be made to look real. Even by a novice tier like myself. If you can catch trout on them it must be a very realistic pattern.

It is amazing to see that almost 15+ years after I created it for fishing the Paluxy River in Glen Rose, I still see people raving about this great little fly. I have used it for carp for well over 10 yrs, with great success. Just tie them in a little larger size (4-6), use some burnt orange dubbing, add a little bit of rubber legs and use lead dumb-bell eyes to make it ride hook up and you have a winning variation of the original Briminator.
