Being fairly new to fly tying, is there any etiquette that goes along with it?
Like in golf, the lowest score on the previous hole tees off first. You don't walk between the hole and someone's putt. Ect.
I was just curious.
Thanks!

Sticking your finger with the hook point and bleeding on the fly is considered bad form...

Don't drink (too much) and tie. Bleeding all over your tying bench and book from which you are trying to learn how to tie a new fly is also bad form.
In this life there is fly fishing and tying...and then there is all that other stuff in between that doesn't matter.

Keep those first two or three tries at tying a new pattern that don't turn out just right. You will be surprised at how well they will likely fish. And you can cast them into places where you might hesitate to cast your "good" ones.

Thanks! None that I know of, just don't shred a guy's fly with criticism unless it is asked for, his best may not look good to you but to him it is something to brag about, that's why it was posted.

One of the first flies I tied was Ben's froggy fly. It was the size of a small dinner plate, shaped like a stingray and floated upside down. Ben looked at it and said "That ain't one of my flies", LOL. So I would say if you can't do a quality job of representing someone's pattern then don't call it by that name. Just like I tied a spinner fly last week. I wouldn't disparage George's work by posting it an saying it's one of George's spinner flies, LOL!!!

The only true etiquette that I know in the fly tying world is that everything must be tied onto a hook using thread. Mike

there are thousands of fly patterns in which some dude simply changed portions of material of the fly; some minute aspect of the fly, etc. and makes the claim that it is his original fly. Since there's little or no copyright, patents, etc. you can do it and get away with it. Anyway, was the original lead and spinner lure called the "little George" named after our very own "George"; or maybe it was named after the gov of Alabama???? I think you can get away with anything in fly tying; my best crawfish imitation was copied from a guy named Reznikoff; which is why I call it "the Reznikoff"-p-

Always give credit to the originator of a pattern... The biggest fop ah is to take someone else's pattern, make a minor change (or no change at all) and then rename it, especially ofter yourself... And if you do "originate" a pattern, and someone shows ya' that it was previously originated by another tyer, be gracious...
