This article talks about fishing for Bonefish, but it contains some great casting advice that is useful in many fishing situations.

The ability to accurately deliver a cast quickly with few false casts is often more important that the ability to make a long distance cast. And it is often difficult to do successfully.

However, very few people are willing to practice making quick and very accurate casts. Everyone wants to make multiple false casts and to go for their personal best maximum casting distance while practicing.

But let�s be honest here, the odds of catching a tree increase exponentially the more you false cast and remember that the fish are located in the water not in the air. So, get your fly back in the water as quick as you can.

Do you want to catch more fish? Spend some time practicing casting to small, randomly placed targets and focus on hitting these targets with as few false casts as possible. It is not as easy as it sounds, especially when the wind is blowing.

To this point in the article.... "The basic concept couldn�t be simpler; outside the tip of the rod are ten feet of leader and ten feet of fly line. Dangling below the reel is a five-foot loop (total of ten feet). This setup gives me thirty feet of line ready to go and if the fish is forty feet away I take the three seconds required to strip off another ten feet". Here is a video that I think graphically show the technique. I hired this guide for a Tarpon trip last September and he made me promise to practice it daily for a month before getting in the boat with him. Glad I did.
