Considering a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Anyone own one or have in the past? Impressions? experiences?
These are the 4 door Jeeps for those that don't know. There is something about them I find very appealing.

Loud on the highway, rough ride, difficult to get in and out of, questionable reliability, cold in the winter, hot in the summer, magnets for rust, stock suspension in not that great, even the 4 door doesn't have a whole lot of leg room in back. I've owned two Wranglers and I don't think I'll ever own another as a daily commuter. 3rd vehicle that spends most of its life on the trail or to only pull out on nice days with the top off, maybe
Been my experience you can get a full size 4x4 truck that will have a better ride, more power, more room, more versatility, more luxuries and better technology for less money.

I can't speak for the new body style Wranglers, but I'm sure they are a little more refined than the older versions. I have a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited and it is fun to drive, but not everyday. But, mine is as far from stock as you can get. If you plan on buying a new one and never modifying it, you might be able to drive it everyday. Once you start with the lift and larger tires, it totally changes the experience and your fuel mileage drops dramatically. I get about 9-11 mpg. Mine has the 4.0L inline 6 cyl. motor. The newer body styles have the Pentastar V6. This should make drivability and fuel mileage much better.
REMEMBER, FREEDOM ISN'T FREE. SO USE WHAT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO YOU RESPONSIBLY.

The new ones are much, much better on the road than old styles. Easier to get in and out of, more comfortable, more like a normal suv.
If you mod one and build it right they can ride better lifted than they do stock.

My JK vs YJ...the vents are in the dash, it has power locks and windows, more power, overdrive, bigger tires and I can't forget about cruise control. It is improved. They say it's bigger and maybe the rear seat is a little wider but I can't really FEEL it in the front seat. It's still cramp vs most SUVs and the ride is still harsh. It is not a highway vehicle. They are the ultimate convertible. They look cool. And they are fun to take off road.

I had a 2013 JKU Oscar Mike edition with 3.6 pentastar. Very nice power if you keep it stock. I put a 5 inch lift and 35's and power went to [censored]. The only thing that bothered me was even in stock form, the wind blew it all over the place while cruising on the interstate.

Jeep Wranglers are awesome! I had a 2006 Unlimited LJ (the longer 2-door model) as my daily driver for close to 8 years. Had a small lift and 32" tires.
It is certainly not for everyone and you need to think hard about the things others have said here in terms of daily driving. My daily commute is minimal with no HWY driving so I was fine and didn't really care about gas mileage. It was very loud on the highway though and that limited how far I wanted to drive it. Replaced it with an xTerra last year so I still have 4-wd but it is not as rugged but road trips are MUCH more pleasant.
I would have kept it but really don't have a good place for a third vehicle.
I am not sure about the new ones but mine was very reliable. never had a mechanical issue.

If you buy one, check the tires. I bought a new 2010 Tacoma, and it came with pi$$-poor Dunlap highway tires. I'm still kicking my but(t) that I didn't get the dealership to swap them out before I drove it off the lot. I've been looking at Wanglers myself, and have noticed some of their tires aren't too swift. You need a fairly aggressive tire on a Jeep, or it ain't a Jeep, in my books.

I had an 85 CJ7 imho they were the best I got 18 mpg with off road tires and a limited slip diff , and the inline 6 , on the other hand the wife had a Liberty with the V6 and My opinion was it sucked I get better mileage out of my 7.3 Power Stroke.she never could get better than 14 mpg in town and yes it was 4x4 and My diesel is 4x2 so guess it's apples to orange' s lets just say I was very disappointed because up till then we had been a jeep family having owned 5 of them over the years.

My daughter has a Jeep Liberty that I bought for my ex-wife. I cringed when the ex picked it over a Nissan or a Mazda but it was her choice. Jeeps are not known for their reliability or MPGs.

Oh they are known for it, but they are known for being unreliable and gas hogs.

The only one we ever had was sold with 240k miles on it, a significant amount. In that time it had the transmission replaced with a new one once, rebuilt twice, the motor was rebuilt once and I cant tell you how many other "minor" problems it had that cost 2x as much for the part as it did for any other domestic vehicle to fix. It was a POS and we never did anything to it but drive it, no towing, no off roading etc. It was wrecked one time with over 200k miles on it and it wasn't a bad wreck. I have limited experience with a few others owned by family members and none of them have been the model of reliability. In that same time frame we owned a 1/2 ton chevy that towed a boat/flatbed every weekend a 30-foot tt several times a year that I sold with 265k miles on it. It still ran great it never had the motor or trans worked on and the biggest thing that was replaced on it was an alternator. It left me stranded 1 time in 17 years with a dead battery that was it. That's what I consider reliable. Oh yeah and the chevy had a 350 v-8 in a full size stretch cab truck that got the same fuel mileage as the jeep's 6.
