I agree that the Hibdons are great guys. As genuinely approachable as any 'celebrities' I've ever met. But Pro Fishing, between the costs, pre-fishing, tourneys and sponsorship commitments.... I would bet it feels a lot like WORK.

Dave Wolack dropped out of the FLW several years ago for this very reason.

when you have sponsors.... the sponsors give you enough information about the lake and where to catch fish. they have a network of anglers that scout for them, then they load the gps with all the waypoints where fish are.
i mean, your sponsor also wants you to be good, is a win win situation. Wow, unbelievable how you think that way. Where did You get this info, because that is absolutely absurd and laughable!!!'

Haha. Exactly. Sponsors EXPECT THE ANGLER to know how, when, and where to fish. And if the angler doesn't, the sponsorship will not last long. Lol. The sponsors are the money/business types. Not the enthusiast type.

I think more pros will have to take the Polanuk route...living in the back of a truck on peanut butter sammies and fishing their ace off until they make a name and win..then the sponsors come.
Tough biz, better catch em every day

Don't forget that sponsorships aren't free rides. You have to perform to keep them, no exceptions. Generally true, but not 100% true, not by a long shot.

Is it just me, or does it seem that a sport where every professional participant has to be subsidized by sponsorships to even get in is not sustainable? Why in the world do they need these astronomical entry fees to hold a fishing tournament?

FLW lets anybody with a pulse who has the cash fish. No offense to Payden Hibdon or any of the others, but he has no business fishing a pro level tour. Results don't lie, and the results aren't good. They have basically been throwing tens of thousands of dollars out the window just because he wants to be a pro.

There are several "pros" who can't fish for flip but they are "pros" because they sell stuff or have outside funding.

some of the sponsorhips these days are not how good a fisherman or marketer you are but who your friends are that control big ad budgets. this is why the boat shows are not what they used to be with the internet folks know whats new by the time its out of the mold.

I'd like to see the budget for an elite series tournament, find out what percentage of the entry fee $$ goes to prize payouts.
