Gary Klein told us today at Bassmaster U that Berkeley bought out Stren this week. I didn't realize that they already owned Spiderwire, too. What will we fishermen argue about when it comes to line preference now? Klein said he doesn't think Stren will go away, but that Berkeley will improve the quality of the Stren line. One thing is for sure, they are almost a monopoly now. What do they control, like 95% of the fishing line market?

It does not matter because there are better ones out there. P-line, McCoys, Ande, etc.

I have not encountered many situations where my limiting factor was my line. It's generally that I don't have time to fish enough to learn the lake. Just my opinion, but I think WAAAAAYYY to much thought is put into little details like this for the average fisherman. I know people who can outfish just about anyone else with whatever line you give them. If you didn't KNOW it was this or that brand, would it impact your fishing either way? Obvioulsy there are some really crappy lines out there, but when you start talking about the big names, what' the big difference? Now if I was a professional fisherman, I wouldn't chance it to anything but what I have proven to myself. I would change lines every tournament and so on, but as a regular old fisherman, I change lines once or twice a year and don't have any problems. In fact, I didn't get broken off all last year, by a fish. Now, reels and rods, different story. ------------------ www.nightfishing.net

"Berkley bought Stren" Boy this stinks for us Stren fisherman.
"Berkley improve Stren"? I have fished with both and Trilene rots faster, I have to respool more often with Trilene. Maybe they can take some pointers from Stren?

Glad to have taken..."the trash in the back!"

I have used both and have had bad luck with Berkley mono. Seems that with Berkley it had more memory, kinked up worse, and backlashed more. I hope Berkley doesnt improve anything. I like my Stren just the way it is.

I have switched to Power Pro Braid and it makes a world of difference. You can feel ten times better with it. I also use a mono leader tied to it with a surgeons knot. For this I use Berkley big Game.
Yes Babe it is an addiction!!

I've tried several different lines, but always went back to Stren. I had a bad experience with Trilene constantly breaking during the cast. So for me, Berkley buying out Stren is not a good thing.

Over the years I've used both under different applications, with no problems with either. Hope they don't combine the two properties into one though. I don't fish tournaments anymore so that's one less thing to have to deal with, in the constant flood of new equipment and changes every year would be enough to drive a competitive angler crazy trying to stay ahead of everyone else. Good fishin! Jimbo
Just one more cast!

Where is the Department of Justice Antitrust Division when you need 'em! This will not be good news at the cash register.
