Nice write up Alan. Wish I could afford all that snazzy Columbia gear. I also make sure I carry an extra pair of wool socks in my dry bag, nothing worse than cold, wet feet.

One thing to remember: Buy warm weather gear when it is cold. Try it out immediately, to see if it works for you. I bought a Columbia jacket in August one year in anticipation of cold weather. When it got cold, I found that wind went thru the jacket like it was gauze. There was no lining or anything to be a windbreak. I couldn't take it back by then.

Great Point! 32 degrees and a 15 mph wind is no time to test.

One thing I've noticed about a lot of guys in these parts is that many go to great lengths to avoid waders. Don't get me wrong, waders aren't my favorite fashion accessory, but I personally don't understand why you would not wear them in the winter. They keep you dry. And if you have good base layer garments, that means you're warm. There's a lot of really cool technical clothing out there that is water resistant, or fast drying, but it only works to a point. If it starts raining hard or you slip while launching and go into the water to mid thigh it might not be a life/death situation, but you are wet! You may be able to fish for a while but if air temps are in the 40s, with a decent wind, you're gonna be uncomfortable pretty quick, which means you're probably not fishing your best and you'll be going home earlier than you wanted to. Skunksville! Fishing in winter is hard, but if you're only thinking about how cold and damp your legs/feet are, it's that much harder. I'll admit it though: technical clothing looks a lot cooler when you do a selfie on facebook!

Like Cody said I can't really justify that kind of expense on cold weather gear especially right now. Would really like to read a poor mans guide to cold water yak fishing that would meet a resonable price range without compromising safety.

I stop in thrift stores and look for cold weather gear. You may find ski bibs, snow pants or other items on the cheap. Anyway you slice it cold weather gear is a must have, as Gutcheck said the key to long winter fishing trips is comfort.
