For me about 10-12mph is my limit if out on open water, but I always try to launch and fish where the wind will push me back towards launch site. If it's over that, I just try to look to fish up in protected areas in a cove or something

There's some big wind numbers in this thread by what I assume are very experienced kayakers. I'm not one of them, and would caution anyone new to it to pay close attention to the direction and speed forecast every time out. I fish Texoma almost exclusively and can tell you for certain that a 12 mph wind from the NE is twice as risky as 24 mph from the SE if your coming out of Highport (a common launch point for kayakers).
I also encourage you to listen to your gut on the water. Roger and I headed out one morning before daylight on a day where the forecast was maybe 8-10 from the NE. Wind felt light at the ramp (protected area). We got to the tire wave-break and could only hear the huge rollers coming down-lake since it was still dark. We stopped and talked for a minute or two and decided to call it right then and there. And 2 hours later, it was a perfect day. lol Yeah, I like a bit of wind and it really comes down to direction, water/air temps, amount of open water and even whether fishing alone or in a group. In general, anything over 15 I have to start assessing and planning. I've been caught in some wind that I literally couldn't make any headway or was too risky, had to beach, try waiting it out and ended up calling for help and figuring out how to get me and the boat back to civilization. Thank God for great and understanding friends!

Got to be less than 15mph for me, and honestly, if i'm not catching fish at 10-15 I won't fight it very long. Something to do with being over 50 years old I guess.

I mainly fish Lake Travis, so wind doesn't bother me too much. To be honest, I feel safer out there on a cold, windy day than any day during peak boating season when the drunken lake lice are out. All this said...in my kinda fishing no wind is bad news. Cheers to that, no wind=tough catfishing.
