long story short, at $300, is this worth it for a beginner?

will be doing most fishing in calm Galveston bay waters.

One suggestion for you. It's winter(duh) and most of the kayak rental shops lay dormant waiting for the spring thaw. If it were me, I would let my fingers do the walking and call some kayak shops. I know you can pick up a one owner low mileage yak that has been used one season. Idea #2 The now Infamous Craigslist. Lots of yaks listed there. Good luck, JP

The pelican really hurt my back, as stated, Craigslist, kayak shops or save a little more and buy the perception, while a pelican will get you on the water and does a good job, I shiver when I think about it compared to my cuda

Would not have anything Pelican makes. Save your money and get something decent.

Already knowing that i love kayak fishing id pay more for a kayak. That said if i were starting out and didnt know if i would like it or not i may get kayak. I will say this too, canoes are generally cheeper and get you on the same water. This may be an option to get you on the water in a solid boat. If you like it go save your money for what you want.

I don't know how that Pelican hull will match up against Galveston Bay oysters. They can really do some damage. I would do as suggested and find yourself something used. thumb

What size of a guy are you? I wouldn't recommend anything without knowing if you are much smaller or larger than average weight/height. For $300 you should be able to find something used that would hold its value until you get something you really want. Now is a great time to find a good deal on kayaks with the colder weather and many folks putting theirs up for a few more months. You also need to think about having the right clothing for this type of weather and dressing to swim if you are new to paddling. Don't forget you should carry a dry bag with extra clothing. If so, best to paddle with someone starting out if you can.

This is a deal. Buy it, use it, and sell it for what you paid for it. Better move quick because this won't last. It says he is selling two so maybe the other is a good deal too.

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.

That is a great deal, if not for the drive to Houston and back I would be all over that. Better jump on it before it is gone, it will not last too long.

I used the heck out of my $200 Sunstream (pelican knock-off). I still use it for short/easy river trips. That said, it isn't very stable, and is uncomfortable if you're in it for a long time.
