Anybody ever tried using them to prevent rust?

I think they were mentioned in a wired2fish article a while back. If you get them from food packages(beef jerky for example) your lures might pick up some scent.

They don't absorb enough water.

I have a few packets in my crankbait boxes and still get rust if I put a lure back in there too wet. I can't tell if they help at all, but they definitely won't prevent it.

I keep them in all of my boxes. They don't really take up much room, so I stick them in there. I feel that they help and any help is good.

They will not absorb that much water but they will reduce moisture. From my experience, drill several small holes on you tackle cases. Ensure it is at the lowest point depending on how you stack your tackle. This will drain the water and then the Silica gel packets will absorb excess moisture

Yes, I buy the medium size from Amazon. I get the 100 packs. I put them in all of my lure storage (a couple per unit), compartments (5 per rod locker) and glove box. I think the 100 pack was about $60.00. I change them out once a year. As stated above, try not to put a lure back wet. It only takes a second to wipe it off or let it air dry for a few min. Your baits will last much longer. Protect your investment. The Flambuea (sp?) are supposed to do the same thing.

Keep everything as dry as possible.
I have been using bullfrog anti-rust strips in my tackle boxes for the past year or so with good success. You can get them at tacklewarehouse

I think Flambeau is making plastic storage boxes with anti-rust dividers that is supposed to prevent rust.

Don't eat those packets, my youngest son says they taste terrible and will make you vomit!
