If it gets wet its toast? Trying to decide if I want to get one

I'm not sure if water will distroybit or not. I have read of a few guys who have had them land in water and made it to them before the sank and were able to dry them out really well and they still worked. My advise would be not to get it out in the rain or let it land in water. It will start to corrode the contacts on the inside. That's like cancer for electronics.
