Those guides on the rod don't look like they are made for braid, or much stress. Are they just single foot stainless guides? No SiC inserts? Recoil guides? Just doesn't seem like a great idea for froggin and yanking fish from slop.

Just my observations. It might be a good rod. Don't know, as it's the first time I've ever looked at one.

The guides that Power Tackle uses are awesome. they hold up to braid I promise. I know guys that have been fishing the same power tackles for 8 years. If someone has issues with the guides on a Power Tackle it's probably user error.

you just described my frog set up perfectly! I have never had any issues when it comes to horsing one in. IMO this is a good set up. But I've used a 6ft mh rod a few times and got good results

No need in spending over $150 on any frog rod.

Dobyns 736 is tough to go wrong with, best frog rod I have thrown. Can also double up as a nice jig rod if you put the frog down in the winter.

I thought so too. Till I broke TWO Falcon BuCoo heavy rods froggin. I have yet to break the one I have now. And if I do, it's covered, since it is DESIGNED for 80lb braid. The other heavy rods were rated up to 20lb mono. Since I broke them both using 80lb braid it was not covered. The first one I thought was just bad luck. The second time I thought it was time to buy a "real frog rod". The Steez XBD, while a frog technique specific rod, is also light weight enough and sensative enought to be used as a t-rig and jig rod. So, when it essentially is a state of the art frog rod, it serves other purposes that make the $480 price tag seem a bargain. Especially when the guides on the rod alone retail for more than you suggest is sufficient for the entire rod. Add in an unconditional lifetime warranty and it makes even more sense to buy a quality product.

Of course, you will likely still disagree with me and say that any old rod will do. And that's also why I said that is a reason for so many different rod builders and even more differen price points. Some people are excellent at settling for mediocrity and some even accel with that type of gear. I have a guy I fish with that uses Skeet Reese rods. Pure [censored]. But he's pretty good at getting fish to the boat. Me? I NEED the help. Haha.

I'm thinking around $300 for the whole deal. I have a rod that is built for pitching and flipping in heavy cover around 7.5 feet and stiff as a pool cue that I have used but I'd like to put it back as a flipper......

Daiwa tatula type r 8.1 and a Terex 7.4H frog special for 300.00 is a very good combo. I personally don't know of any new combo that is better than that.

I do find the Veritas to have an unwieldy level of backbone for a given power/taper compared to other brands though don't you? I love punching and yanking them out of weeds with my Veritas as well!

That said, as for the reel, money no object.. the new Revo BEAST is, well... a BEAST!

Most of my stuff is either American made All Star or Falcon and back when I started in this sport that was the best money could buy. My reels are mostly older top of the line Abu Garcia and Quantum. One thing I learned about buying tackle is always buy the best you can afford. I started out with Walmart gear; literally, but every rod I bought from them I'd break in a matter of a few weeks after I purchased them. Back then they had a no questions ask return policy and most of them I got a refund or a new rod in exchange. That was nice but when I bared down on tournament fishing I quickly realized if I broke a rod in the middle of a tournament my day was over. Especially if the technique I was using to catch fish revolved around the tackle I was using. When I went to the high end gear all of that stopped. I have rods that are over 20 years old and some of them with as much as 10 years steady use and they are still in great shape. I think since I made the switch I 've broken one rod and that was because I got off balance in some rough water and stepped on it. It was my favorite too. An American made All Star WR1 worm rod. Can't get those anymore.........

I have been very happy with 2 Dobyns Savvy 735s but recently added a 7'4" Diawa Tatula that Mr Perry introduced me to and that is another great option.

I am curious to see the new Duckett Terex rods that Rojas designed.

These all fit your price range with plenty to get a good reel

Good luck

I have been looking for the perfect frog rod myself. I have some good ones and to me sensitivity is not much of an issue because you can see them blow it up. There is a second or two where you need to feel them but that's nothing like feeling a bite out in deep water. I think accuracy, distance, fast tip and strength are the main components.

If you get one too light you will be in trouble in the thick stuff or even around sparse lilly pads. Get one too stiff and I think you are a little too likely to rip the frog out of their mouths. This happened to me with my Cara Amistad.

A lot of people don't think of these as frog rods but I have had success with a heavy duckett micro guide. I have got the fish out of some pretty good cover and the micro guides and flex with the rod allow me good distance and accurate casts. I have a mega bass perfect pitch that I may convert to a real heavy cover type frog rod. But I'm open to suggestions on a rod that would be perfect for what I had described.
