I've got a little mad money from the holidays and was thinking about improving my tackle inventory with a rig to chunk frogs in the deep grass and weeds. What do you guys recommend?

What ratio for a reel?

I know a lot of guys like a big broom stick. I prefer a 7 foot MH or H action. I can make more accurate casts, get better action out of the bait, and still get them out of the grass easily. Been using a 7 foot MH Veritas for about 2.5 years now and it is perfect.

There's a 7.0MH frog rod as well...but I prefer a 7.4H....I need the backbone and confidence...Never know when Hawgzilla is gonna suck in ol kermy!

During the spring and summer, I rig 2 frog rods. One is a 7'1" Duckett White Ice Heavy, the other is one of the old orange Carrotstix 7'3" MH. Of the two, I prefer the MH action better for accuracy if I'm throwing at specific cover (like the Cypress trees I fish most of the time). And, I've caught 2 over 9 lbs the last couple of years on this set up. Had no problem horsing either one of them out of the grass and pads.

If you're just raring back and chunking kermy over pads or grass and there are no overhead obstructions, you can get away with the heaviest action, longest rod you want.

I use the highest gear ratio reel I can find, I personally prefer Lews, but anything over 7:0-1 would be my recommendation.

One more thing, I don't fish the frog with less than 65lb braid.

I use a Daiwa Steez SVF-XBD 7'4" Extra heavy Extra fast. The reel is a Daiwa Steez 7.9:1 reel. I use 70-80lb Samurai Braid.

How "mad" is the money? This setup, spooled with line will run about $1200 plus tax. But, DDDAAAAMMMMMMNNNNNNN is it awesome for froggin!

Those guides on the rod don't look like they are made for braid, or much stress. Are they just single foot stainless guides? No SiC inserts? Recoil guides? Just doesn't seem like a great idea for froggin and yanking fish from slop.

Just my observations. It might be a good rod. Don't know, as it's the first time I've ever looked at one.

Promise braid won't hurt those guides. I have used every guide from SIC-low quality and never had issue

For light to moderate cover and smaller frogs I use a Daiwa Tatula Type R 100XS on a Megabass Orochi XX Tour Versatile with 55lb Daiwa Samurai braid.
Heavy cover and larger frogs I go with a Daiwa Tatula Type R 100XS on a Megabass Perfect Pitch and 70lb Daiwa Samurai

You might be right. It just seems like a really bad idea. I know that SiC rings and titanium double footed KR concept guides are theoretically a MUCH better idea. I know when I use my frog combo it is gonna stand up to just about any abuse. I've reeled in 10lb bass with 4-5lbs of carpet hanging from and dead sticked it into the boat. Not a problem. I wouldn't try that on my recoil Fujis or my micro Fujis. Just seem wrong for an "special frog rod".

Again. Just my thoughts. I guess that's why there are so many rod makers.
