I just recently got a pair of cuda's and 1 is a 14 and the other is a 12. I took them out on a windy day and it seemed that the 12 was easier to maneuver in the wind/waves. I was wondering if I fish lakes and river which one should I use as my main yak? I have always heard the 14 will be faster and more stable. Any help would be great. I also plan on taking them out a few more times to see which I like more

Thanks
Drew

how big/tall are you?
I/m 6-2 and have owned a 12' yak and will never do that again. Just not enough room.

As a general rule I would use the 14' on lakes in open water and the 12' in rivers/streams.

biggerD, you and I are the same size, and I don't do 12' kayaks, either. They typically have capacities around 350#, which won't do it for guys our size. I have a Ride 115, which is 11'6" long and 33" wide, and has a capacity of 500#. It's as good a river boat as I have found, and that is what I bought it for (moving water). I don't know much about the Cuda 12, but I doubt if it has the capacity to carry you and your gear effectively.

Go with the 14. I have two 12's and two 14's but the kids only use the 12's now. A couple times I've gone up creeks and decided I better turn around while I still can but at that point a 12 wouldn't have gotten me much more up the creek before it couldn't turn. I think if I was worried about that kind of stuff I would get a 10 footer. The room and better tracking of a 14 will probably be more useful than being able to make it 30 feet more up a creek. As for turning and getting blown around just add a rudder.

I have a 15' Native FX. I am 6'7", 350lbs. I needed it for the size and weight cap. My yak is fast and capable. It takes a little effort to turn it around, but I am pleased with the way it handles in lakes and in rivers.

If you are 6' or taller and over 200# a 14 will serve you well.
A 12 will get the job done also, but a bigger person will notice a big difference between the two.
Where and how you fish is also a factor between the two.

Just one more cast!

You need the 14 for sure and the rudder is a must, very nice to have on a windy day so you don't have to paddle with one arm all day!

I'm 6'6 about 220 and have no problems with my cuda12. Me personally I like the 12 over the 14. The wind beats the heck out of the 14.From what I've seen the 12 is a bbetter boat than the cuda14. Before I start a fist fight I'm only speaking of the cuda.

14. Most texas rivers are like very long lakes anyway.
