Really enjoyed the video. We live up in Milam county and have some land on the Yegua here. Every time I watch your video's makes me want a kayak.

The kayak event on the 17th is just that .. a kayak fishing day on Yegua creek staged at Newmans Bottom. Unfortunately the pavilion at Nails Creek park was reserved in advance of this event and without the pavilion I can't really do much else... Having the whole Saturday event down at Newman's is probably easier as we can stagger launch times to suit the number of kayakers as they show up.. We might arrange shuttles if need be to help spread out paddlers all along the creek. Another consideration is that the lake is high enough now for regular boat traffic coming up from the lake. Most of the recent history the lake has been too low for anything other then paddlers to cross the shallow upper end of the lake where the Yegua enters so us kayakers have had the whole creek to ourselves. We will have to share the creek this year with the many banker and boaters that will be looking for their share of the whitebass bounty..

Went to Newman's this afternoon. Water was high and moving very fast. At the low water crossing, the water was 12" deep on my rubber boots and I estimate that the current was +5mph. Definitely too fast to kayak safely.

I'd say that by the last report the Yegua has risen even more since Saturday. It is a tough fish when on the rise or fall but that doesn't mean you cant find a few fish. From most of the reports and from my own experience the afternoon bite is best. It seems we find and catch the most whitebass on our way back up the creek to the launch. The last two trips down to Wolf pond have not been very productive but I'm not sure why. The whole creek fills with new fish as the lake comes up and they rest in the deep pools before moving further up the creek.

Cedar creek has been dry so long that I doubt if it has many fish in it yet although it was really rolling up and muddy Saturday.. all the creeks were running high and muddy...

The lake backs up the Yegua all the way to Newmans bottom so the current from the low water crossing down to the lake slows dramatically.. The danger is in the high water and all the logs and stuff that block the creek and the slick banks. You do not want to fall into that cold water frown it will ruin your day fast !

When the creeks are flooded and moving fast, it's difficult to find feeding fish. The possibility of slipping on the muddy bank into the water isn't worth the trip at all. You fall in, chances of getting out quickly are slim. Most of the banks are vertical and hard to climb back out on. If the water is moving fast, you will be washed downstream some distance before you can grab onto something and pull yourself out. Just not worth the odds in my opinion. And very few people down there to help you out if you should need help. If any help at all.

They haven't opened up the dam to release water yet.

Good! They will though, they probably got so much rain downstream from Somerville, they are waiting for that to recede before they release any more in that direction. Since Core of engineers built this lake just for that purpose, to prevent flooding, this is what am basing my opinion on. That would be my way of guessing at this anyways. I am also guessing that about 4 to 6 feet above full pool probably puts water up in the camping areas and they will try to prevent that as well. Big oh Lake, takes a lot of water to bring it up though.
238.29 I'll post this so I can remember where the level is at right now and watch that web site you posted to monitor the rise.

1-8-2015 ** 238.37 ** still coming up.

Lake Somerville is a water conservation and flood control lake in the Brazos river watershed with water contracts (legal commitments) downstream. Those downstream water demands will have the COE release from Lake Somerville regardless of lake level. Almost every drop of surface water in the state of Texas is already allocated which is most of the problem when we have long dry periods.. The Brazos River Watershed Water resource management is a very complicated, political and contentious topic in this great state that will greatly influence the future for all of us. If we get this water management wrong the consequences will be history making..

There is a very lively discussion on the subject of water right here on the TFF Dry Lakes.. what can we do

Be a good citizen, get educated, get active then get involved as this isn't just about our rights as citizens, landowners or businesses but about the very thing that life cannot be without. This is the most important issue of our time, get it right and we all can continue the pursuit of happiness, get it wrong and life becomes a real struggle..
