I have a '99 Sprint with Rack and Pinion steering that I bought about a month ago. The boat runs great, but the steering is VERY tight. Its so tight that you nearly have to lift yourself off the seat to turn at high speeds. Does anyone have any suggestions how to free the steering up? I found 2 greese ports and greesed both of them

There is really not a good way to lubricate cables. Those fittings are for the tilt tube. Probably going to need to replace cables.

Mine was the same I noticed that the steering link at the motor was dirty so i ran the steering all the way right so the link was exposed and wiped it down, then I sprayed a little PB Blaster on it then turned the wheel all the way to the left and let it set for 15-20 min. ran the wheel all the way to the right again wiped the crud off. I repeated this for 2-3 times a day for about 3 days and the steering freed up to where it was very easy to move. Might not work for you but mine is very easy now.

Is it harder in one direction then the other? Engine trim position can cause the steering to be really stiff. Mines very hard if the motor trim is too far down.

Is it dual cable? I had an issue with mine, brand new boat off the lot, caused by incorrect bracket spacing in front of the tilt tube. The cables bound up when being fully retracted. I had skeeter replace the bracket that looked like someone made in their garage with the Yamaha kit and the problem went away. You could disconnect one cable at a time to see if the cables are your problem.

Not the answer you may want to hear but I had the same problem. My rig is 18' with 90HP and kept cleaning and greasing and working the exposed steering arm. Working and then used new marine grease to lubricate the grease zerts.
Bottom line, finally gave up on ever getting that to work, replaced with Bay Star hydraulic steering.
Even if you replace the steering cable, depending on how long you keep your rig, you will begin to encounter the same problems all over again.
If you plan on keeping your rig, spend the money and be done with it.

It's hard both ways and it doesn't matter how far the motor is trimmed

an old harley trick to lube cables was to disconnect the cable at the helm end and build a funnel around the end with wax paper and elec tape. the tie the cable up as high as you can and fill the funnel with oil(light weight), let it sit overnight and try it the next day.

Where the cable connects to the motor it goes through the housing. It sounds like that metal housing may have been bent just enough to cause some binding. It happened to my steering once when I had the motor off the boat. I was able to straighten that housing enough to remove the binding. Give it a look.

Current Cylinder Index is 42.

I think the shaft may be a little warped. I took it off and cleaned it. The innermost shaft, when pushed back into the inner sleeve, touched the inner sleeve at the bottom but not at the top. I put it back together and it steers a little better but is still pretty hard.

Any advice as to where I can buy the cables near the metroplex? and Does anyone know how long of a cable I need for a '99 Sprint 19 Ft?
