sorry but any fish big enough to spool you is going to be nearly immune to a few "taps on the rod". I haven't had a freshwater fish big enough to spool anything I've fished with. That being said, even cranking the drag down, I've had marlin, tuna, amberjacks, big sharks etc. put up a fight like I've had a Volkswagen hooked to my rod and reel.

The best method I've found through trial and error from a kayak, is to release all drag and chase after the fish to get line back. Have done this successfully several times on tarpon and once on a 10 foot sawfish using Shimano Cardiff 100 with 15 lb test line (less than 100 yards of line fully spooled). It depends on the species of fish and locale but it seems those fish will quickly slow down or stop when pressure is minimized, allowing time to paddle up, reel up line, and go through same procedure again and again. Sawfish foul hooked on topwater plug.

Stand the rod straight up. Allows for more drag without breaking off.

fish with braid...if you get spooled, the line will float...just wait a few minutes, find the end of the line. It has happened to me twice peacock bass fishing. Both time we found the line, retied and caught the fish.

If you're fishing for big fish and you're close to getting spooled then you should have 200-300 yards of line out. Tapping the rod isn't going to do anything. The tap will be eaten up by the drag of the line in the water not to mention the stretch.

I can tell y'all a trick for getting a big ray off the bottom. Put a blue crab on a snap swivel and hook it to your line with a weight. Let him ride down there and let your line go slack a little. The ray will lose his mind trying to get away from it. Then if he won't stop running choot em.
