I'm an avid Bass fisherman, and have always wanted to try fly fishing. Now that I live so close to so much great trout fishing, I finally bought a entry level fly fishing starter kit with my christmas gift cards. Hopefully fly fishing isn't as addictive as I expect it to be!

Anyone have any good book recommendations? I really don't know anything about fly fishing, so any good book that explains the basics would be helpful.

Welcome to the madness. There are plenty of fine books. But I recommend getting over to flyanglersonline.com and globalflyfisher.com for sheer volume of useful information. For casting, I recommend personal lessons. But failing that, Lefty Kreh videos.
I know you asked for books, however I'd recommend the above. There are books a go go referenced on those sites as well.

This is true to some extent. The stuff adds up pretty fast but instead of the high dollar stuff you can do like I do and wait on sales or buy used stuff. Orvis is having a sale plus a extra % off right now on a bunch of fly lines so instead of giving 80$ you can pick them up for 36$. They also have this Fly Offer going right now wich cannot be beat for a small set of flies.

As the old saying goes: "There are two kinds of fishing lures. Those that are designed to catch fish, and those that are designed to catch fisherman's wallets." Well, I can tell you from personal experience that my wallet is a biter!

Thanks for the advice so far guys. I just think it be fun to backpack into some fly fishing country in the Sierra Nevadas and do a little fishing. I've got a lot to learn.

Hey Moonriver, it is time for you to open up. sarcastic

You learned a lot about flyfishing in a short time. What resources did you use?

Thanks for the heads up on the fly lines!

I'll 2nd that. A decent bait caster and rod is going to set you back at least $200 and the lures themselves are often far more expensive and in my experience lost almost as often to snags in the brush. Don't get me started on what a bass boat costs to run and maintain. I'd love to compare bank accounts with some of my conventional angler buddies over the course of a year. I'd venture in more than a few cases the gas bill alone would pay for a trip to Belize.

As far as books, this has been a great resource to me over the last few years-

I certainly don't agree 100% with everything in there, but you would be hard pressed to find more handy tips and tricks learned from a lifetime on the water.

Hi Rex, I was just kidding, have some fun.
Fishing, hunting, or any other sports are money consuming activities. We are in a constant pursuit of good, new stuffs. That's no ending to it. But it's worthy it, to me anyway.

Thanks Rex for your kind word. I do lots studies: watching YouTube for casting, fly tying, for basics. Then I went to your casting practice for more hand to hand teaching, and went to fly tying events held by DFF for first hand learning. I do think that I benefit a great deal from joining DFF, from the helps of DFF, FWFF, RRFF members, and all TFF members. I learned a great deal of fly fishing on this site. Thanks all! I do appreciate all your help. Wish y'all Happy New Year!

I did not spend more time fly fishing as I want. Because I do have lots fishing buddies who are not fly fishers. Couple of weeks ago, I went tuna fishing with 2 friends on Scat Cat.

In the new year, I will put more time into it. I already set two goals, I have to reach at least one of those two goals.

Was having dinner with another couple last week. The guy told us about a hot new golf course in North Dallas. He described the green fee of $112 as "a real bargain"

On the way home the wife literally said

"I'm so glad you don't have expensive hobbies like that"

Helios 2 here I come!

Fly fishing when wading is really much cheaper than bass fishing from a boat. The rods and reels just cost a lot more and learning how to catch fish again is a lesson in humility and patience. You will learn a lot about fish though.

There are also good books for entertainment written about and around fly fishing. John Gierach wrote some good ones.
