Has anyone used the external puck gps receiver for Humminbird units? I just bought a 959ci DI to use on the bow and was curious if adding the Puck receiver with heading sensor would be beneficial? Another question I have is, if I have the AS GPS HS attached, when I mark a waypoint, is it marking the location of my unit or the location of the puck? If I have two Humminbird units, would it be benificial to have a puck for both units, as close to the transducer as possible, or should/could I just share one puck between the two?

When you connect an external GPS antenna, the unit will automatically use it instead of the internal.
You can also choose either one in the unit menu.

For the most accurate waypoints based on soner returns, the antenna should be where the transducer is.

The HS antenna will keep the position icon a boat symbol instead of a O when less than .6 mph and show the direction the bow is pointed on the chart view.
Very beneficial for offshore waypoints like brush piles.

Thanks, Wayne. I think I am going to put one on for the 959 on the bow, then maybe add another on the transom, once I get around and get me a 1199 for the console. I put down some pvc condos, and plan to put some boo buckets in the future. I would like to try to get as accurate marking as possible for these. Right now, I spend a lot of time searching for my piles I have put down.

Be aware that the compass is influenced by ferrous metals, high current flow, and magnets like it the trolling motor. Test the mount location with a compass before drilling any holes and/or test on the water with the outboard and/or trolling motor operating to check for interference.

I have one beside my trolling motor and the heading is incorrect with the motor stowed and works great with the motor deployed. That is when I use it though, so it is not an issue for me.

12V Dc wiring will have the greatest effect on a magnetic compass. If you have to run wiring close to one, it helps to twist the wire together to reduce the effect of the pos & neg field. Also, for accuracy, you need to check the compass for accurate reading anytime you add anything electrical close to it.
