Some of the older "round" rods that look a bit like bamboo may be early fiberglass rods, which many of the bamboo rod makers switched to in the '40s and '50s. One of my favorite old bamboo rod builders, The Phillipson Company, also made great fiberglass rods. The company was bought by a guy who has a website at www.ricksrods.com and sells both used Phillipson bamboo and fiberglass rods as well as fiberglass blanks and components. One of my regrets is selling an old Phillipson Dry Fly Special bamboo rod during a period of pecuniary scarcity.
