He didn't know how to use it correctly anyway. That would be the case with me. Other than using my GPS for following a trail, I'm still fishing in 1980. I use my units for two things only...depth and water temperature.

Honestly, for what I'm getting, I think $3k is pretty cheap. Do you realize the amount of money was/is spent on marketing, research, support, warranty and the manufacturing of the product itself?

My concern is that "for that price" you are still buying a work in progress & there are numerous updates to fix something in the software that should have worked correctly before the "latest" model was released.

3k will buy a BA Samsung 65" uhd curved 3d tv lots of marketing, R&D and technology in that thing heck you can tell it what you want it to do, it will change non uhd signal into uhd picture. If I'm dropping 3k I will be watching it every night. But for the ones that got the money to spend on the new graphs more power to them it is their money.

Mount a 32" tv to the front of your boat and see how long it lasts.....

All this griping about the expense of the HIGH END stuff...boats, electronics, gear... If you don't want to pay it or can't, there are plenty of other options at lower price points for all the products. Sounds like a few folks just need to be thankful for what you can get/have, and stop worrying about keeping up with what Joe Bob Bass has.
It's not about getting what you want, but wanting what you got.

I don't think they are too expensive for what you get. I figure that graphs are the one thing on a boat that doesn't start wearing out on the first day that you use it. With updates and keeping them clean, they actually can get better as the years go by. Trolling motors, outboards, batteries, carpet, paint, all start to lose value from day one. Used graphs may not hold resale value, but function wise, they can last for many years with no loss of performance.

Lower end unit pricing is driven by profit margin. Upper end unit pricing is driven by supply & demand. The only real differences between an HDS-5, which costs $500 list ($400 on sale) and an HDS-10 ($2000) is the screen size. There's no way a 10" screen costs $1500 more than the 5" screen, and all the R&D/support costs are fixed. They're charging that much because people pay it. Not because it provides adequate profit margin. I bet it doesn't cost them $100 more to make an HDS-10 than it does an HDS-5.
