Time for the next installment of our search story; in this chapter, Dan and I shift our focus from the river to Lake Amistad and the giant canebrakes that made their way to the impoundment after the flood. We'd never heard of canebrakes until we started floating rivers like the Devils and the Pecos, but we were about to learn a whole lot more about them than we wanted to. Hope you enjoy the write up: Pecos River Journal - Ike and the River Cane

Great read Bert. 6 months later and I still think of that trip all the time. It doesn't help that I lost so much of my camera/video gear. Lots of new projects happening and it's been a struggle with the cheaper junk i've had to throw together. Yea, I think of the trip every time I open my camera bag. At least that bag doesn't stink. grin Just a quick clarification...that loaf of bread was actually a bag of tortillas, although two months half in water and half in 100 degree temps , could make it hard to distinguish. barf That night I was going to put them back in the original drybag that they went in, but got lazy/tired and left them in there and laid down. I can only imagine how bad that stank was.
The stink of the silt was on everything that they brought back too. It was amazing how fine it was and how it got in every little crevice, crease, and hole. Most of it had to be thrown out. My jetboil survived and was cleaned, then cleaned again, and we used it last month when we climbed Guadalupe Peak.
Thanks for such great write ups Bert. You're a true artist with your words. I'll forever be grateful I was a part of this crew...but sometimes I wish I was reading this story about someone else. roflmao

Roger that, Scott. Thanks for correcting the record. I will amend the story. It sure was some nasty stuff...LOL.

Great entry. The highs and lows of finding some of the lost belongings must be tough. You find some and that's great and feels like progress. It's not yours, it smells like death and probably has to be thrown out. That probably feels like a punch in the gut.

I've read every word you've written on this story and some installments twice. Can't say I've ever enjoyed reading anyone's adventure more.

Same here. The only disappointment is that I always want to read more. smile thumb

Bert have you thought of getting someone with a RC helo with a video camera to go with you and video the cane brakes? You probably still couldn't get to something if you found it but you would at least know it's there and may go back later and get it. I think they can actually see real time with some of the equiptment being used now.

Thanks everyone, for the kind comments.

Deric...I have not looked into remote helos or other UAVs, but I did look into renting a real helicopter, and it would have cost me a thousand dollars. That includes trucking the helo into Comstock from Uvalde ($350) and an hour of flight time ($650). I used to think an hour would be enough to cover the huge river canyon, but after having been there, I know I was wrong and glad I didn't do it.
