I know that it's illegal for someone to sell shad without the proper license, but if someone would like to trade shad for beer let me know. I work for one of the top craft breweries in the US. So if you're into craft beers or would like to try them without spending the $$ give me a holler. Feel free to PM me if you don't want everyone knowing that you have shad.
Thanks.

Fresh is always best, but you can freeze the larger ones. The smaller shad don't freeze so well.

While you can't sell shad people can give them to you. You might find someone who will give you shad as long as you "buy" one of their ziplock bags to put the shad in....just a thought.

Thanks. I was reading this thread again tonight and it sparked a funny old memory. I went fishing with a guy one time on Texoma. He had the boat, bait and snacks and I was suppose to meet him at highport early. So I pulled into the boat ramp that mornin and waited a little bit. A few minutes later he pulls in and starts backing his boat down the ramp. Suddenly, he stopped halfway down and got out of the truck. I walked up to him and said " good mornin" and he said "good mornin". He then jumped up in the back of his truck and opened up a cooler and said " Rick, I better get our bait outta the cooler before I forget ". I laughed and said "cool". He reached down in the watered down ice and after a few seconds it started to sound like he was stirring a giant container of ice Tea!!! Lol! He said " what the $$$$.... my baits gone "!!!! He slammed the lid down on the cooler and I said "what dude...your baits gone"? He looked at me with a mad panic stricken look on his face and said " dude, I think my friends must have snuck in last night and stole my bait out of the cooler". I said " what dude, nobody would do that"! He said " you don't know my friends "!!!! Long story short, we had to work our rear ends off that mornin catchin gizzards and then after hours of chasin them down, we only found one blue cat that was hungry that day! Lol! Funny stuff! Anyways, Good bait can be a pain for everybody at times. Hope you got ya some.

If you totally submerge the small(or big)shad in water when it's frozen, it stays much firmer. I use small butter tubs. Then take the "block" of ice/shad and put it in a 5 gal. bucket of water to thaw. Not as good as fresh, but helps to keep them firm longer. This same trick is good for freezing eating fillets. Keeps them from freezer burning.

I'm about to have to make a shad run and drive to Dallas. There is a serious shad deficiency in that area.

If you are going to try it soon hit the creaks. I tried for shad tonight there on the lighted docks and caught nothing but baby crappie (of course I threw them back). Be very careful if you are throwing in the creaks. There is so much dang cover back there your net will get hung up 90% of the time. You can catch hundreds off the docks when the water is warmer in spring but with colder water, they are starting to move up the creaks! Good luck!
