Here's a RR trestle. Not a good photo with phone but you can see the cross ties plain as day.

What depth would you start fishing at, for these crappie? (Hint, it was a cloudy summer day.)

Based on the depth of the water and position of the fish I'd start about 10ft deep. But lower my jig to about 8ft and let it fall very slowly. If no thump raise it back up and repeat. If no thump let out about 2ft of line and repeat. And keep repeating process till I got a thump. At 10 ft I'd also move the bait side to side slowly to see if they wanted to chase the bait. Do the same at 12 and 14 ft.

Yep you guys nailed it.

Sometimes on cloudy days the crappie seem to drift away from their cover and up a little higher in the water column. Try to pick off a few that are freelancing then go catch the ones that are sticking tight to the timber.

Today the water temperature was in the mid 50's, cloudy and with heavy rain at times.

The crappie that I have been catching in 32 to 38 FOW on timber at 24 to 30 deep, moved up to 12 to 16 foot deep.

Same pattern applied in the cooler water temps today as it does in the summer months.

Unfortunately I did not catch any 2 pounders today but, I did catch another limit. I will post up some pictures for ya later.

Thanks for playing.

**I am looking at the pic and dont understand it. Where is the bottom of the lake? Guess i am not understanding maybe the way the pic is taken? What is the big orange part on the right hand side of the pic?

That's a side scan pic looking right. The vertical line blue/orange is the bottom. The orange area is looking straight across the bottom. The tree is the object sticking out from the orange. The darker line across the orange is the sonar shadow from the tree. The smallest specs above the tree is a small school of bait fish, probably shad. The other larger specs are crappie above the tree and just behind the tree even higher in the water column. And some even with the tree top in front of the tree. Crappie don't always hold right on a tree when there is a school of them. Smaller crappie will tend to hold in a tighter school close to the tree. Larger crappie sometimes scatter out like these. Same thing happens at brush piles about 50% of the time. All the fish aren't always right over the brush pile.
