So I'm still trying to catch my first hybrid and have a depth-finder on my boat. It does a great job at marking the bottom, but it doesn't show fish. It's one of those older/less expensive models that shows a fish symbol instead of actual sounding arches. No GPS either.

The first question: Since I can't reliably mark fish should I look for changes in bottom contour, like you do with catfish?

Second question: When you guys are dead-sticking, are you anchored over a spot or drifting?

I took Friday off work and will be heading out to Ray Hubbard, as it's closest to where I live. If you see a fella in an old green john boat looking confused, throw me a wave.

Can you turn off the fish Id and read the arches ?

I am no deadstick expert, but I think most people drift or use their
trolling motor. Some use a drift sock if it is windy to slow down.

Anchoring would work, but the fish tend to move.

Most dead sticking is done on suspend fish , so bottom contour not critical.

The main thing is to locate fish and be patient,

I'm not sure about turning off the symbol. I'll check.
