I was thinking of booking a trip to sugar. I have never been to mexico before. I fish falcon often but very rarely venture onto the mexican side of the lake. What are yall's thoughts of a trip into mexico to fish sugar?

Fishing seems to be real good over there, but I'd think 3 or 4 times before I'd go. Can be a less than friendly country. I hear guides are staying in the town at the Mexican end of the dam, that would make me twitch.

Every employee of the company I work for that travels to Mexico carries a GPS tracker and gets a safety briefing including code words for being kidnapped. Plus special escorts in country. Sounds too much like Baghdad 10 years ago. Ain't no bass worth all that to me.

It's been pretty tough there as of late. I'd watch reports and wait for things to pick up before I'd book a trip. Tommy law is the way to go

I want to chime in here. I have spent over 100 days guiding on Sugar lake this year, so I think I can speak for Sugar lake and its fishing and safety . There are several guides that are back to guiding on Sugar lake and the reason we are is that things have settled down over there and now it is safe to go. The fishing has been great on both numbers and better than numbers the quality is way up there. The motel we stay at is very very safe and the food and rooms are great. There is always going to be people that have never been and will give their opinion , but to me that is like getting a football coach to give you golf lessons. I have a fishing report that you can go back on and month and look to see how the fishing has been for me. I have only had one subpar trip the whole year and that was due to a bad front and 61 degree water. Sugar is a great lake and in my opinion the best lake to have a shot at a DD bass. Please check out my site Falconlakeguide.com and look at this past year of trips on Sugar Lake . PM me or call me if you have any more questions about Sugar Lake.

I have been going down to Mexico hunting for a couple of years, no problems at all, I am leaving in a week to go hunting for a week, I think you can find trouble in Mexico if you go looking for it, kinda like right here in the good ole USA. I am going to make that Sugar trip with Tommy one day soon.

So many folks are clinging to stories from a long time ago. There are other hot beds in Mexico right now and luckily this isn't one of them. I'm definitely going down.... just need to make time on my schedule to do it. These guides wouldn't risk their lives for a few hundred bucks.

I have no problem making the trip across. We had planned on doing it last year on our yearly Falcon trip, but didn't go because of the hurricane style storm/front that came through the one day we were going across.
Looking forward to another trip this year if we can get it planned.

I am not going to disagree with the folks who have responded regarding their personal experiences on Sugar Lake or to their comfort level on their personal safety. I have fished Mexico, not Sugar Lake, and would love to go back to doing so. I just can't make myself take the risk.
The odds are probably astronomical in something happening but it only takes once. I have a family who depends on me to take care of them and provide for their future. As much fun as it is in catching over 100 fish a day it just isn't worth it. I also would like to point out that there is still a Travel Advisory in place for this region and it doesn't take much money to live like a King in Mexico.

Being plugged in down there is important and Tommy is. I trust him and have gone down there personally to help him with scouting etc. My only advice is to hire him. That pretty much guarantees an awesome trip. I am not saying that just because he is a good friend of mine. He has done some amazing things on that lake, just silly and it's all documented with pics. My Dad and I used to travel countless hours fishing every big bass lake you can think of over the past dang near 20 years. If this Sugar option was available back then No question my pops and I would of seen Tommy twice a year. Best of luck Fishingman......wish ya the best

thank you everyone for the replies. I have determined that now is not the right time for me to go. I believe it is safe but it might not be worth a small possibility of something going wrong. Hopefully in the future I will get to experience this awesome lake. I appreciate the feedback
