I've just gotten back into fishing the last few years after a 25 year dry dock and I'm still amazed at the improvements made during that time. I know there are some old timers out there like myself, so excluding electronics (that's a given) what are some of the best improvements you've seen?

The lines, amazing. Rods sensitivity. Plastics variety. and the boats and motors you see just to catch fish. I fished every summer with my grandparents out of a 16'alum V hull with a 10hp, we crappie fished all day and it was so wonderful. Four in a boat, with four rods and minnows. Oh and the stores, Cabelas and BPS, Grampa used to drive to Memphis, about 70 miles away to go to Sears to the fishing dept.

The shallow water anchors like Talon and Power pole. They are game changers for me.

Don't forget the resources we now have readily available, such as this great site! The research and conservation have stepped up a lot also! Tournament formats and definitely popularity.

Graphite rods, graphite reels, tungsten weights, and fluorocarbon/braid fishing line.
forget the electronics, those components turn you into a human fishfinder.

Wait, wait, I had pistol grip graphite and boron fishing rods back in the early 80's. I got to say that I'm impressed with the surgical sharpness of the hooks nowadays. They require very little set to get a good hook up. I used to sharpen my hooks but no need anymore.

I think tungsten weights and fluorocarbon line are the biggest improvements. These two components are worth the money and they do make a difference.
