Do you run down the lake wide open or just cruse down the lake?
I no longer tournament fish and find that I can almost double my mileage running at 3750 RPM as opposed to 5800 RPM. Running a 250 VMAX HPDI on a Ranger Z21.

If we concentrated on the really important stuff in life,
there'd be a shortage of fishing poles

Of course everybody will get better gas mileage when just cruising down the lake rather than running wide open. I run a 250 ProXS on BassCat Cougar FTD and I get about 16 MPG according to my smart gauge when cruising 3500-4000 RPMs. But I am a speed demon and love going fast. When I push 5500-6000 RPMs, 78-82mph, I still get 7-9 MPG.

Something is really wrong with your smart gauge.

The answer to this question is like asking if you like Coke vs. Pepsi. It's a personal preference. For me it depends on the situation. Tournament time for me is "Go Time" WOT all the way. Pleasure fishing on the other hand....well, it just depends on my mood. Usually if I'm alone looking for structure or just checking out a lake, I'll slow down, save some gas, cruise and enjoy the day. If not I hammer down.

Why own a 250 to just "cruise"? :-) But really I do usually keep it to 4000-4500 RPM for a good combination of speed/economy. Still dont get 16MPG like Jaguar above! Dont even get 16 GPH(gallons per hour).

So you can go 640 miles on 40 gallons of fuel. I'm trading my Ranger for a Basscat!
Retirement best job ever.

There is no way you are getting that kind of gas mileage with a 250 outboard.

I'm going to find out on Sunday, first trip down the lake I plan on going Wide Open, just to see what the new boat will do!
I usually am more of a cruising type of guy though! Never had a 250 before, so I want to see what it will do!
