But, that said, you only have to buy them once and maintain them and they really are cheaper in the long run. You can buy a couple $100 reels every few months or buy one $600 reel and own it for life. The Steez really is the best reel money can buy. Period. And the fact that the gears will last forever and it is somewhat easy to disassemble and clean it is a great investment.

Some people just cant read. When the OP specifically stated he was looking for a reel for $100 or less, not for that is $400 or more. But since the replied opinion breached the original request, i would like to mention the Phleuger Premier at $149. This reel has bang for its buck! Many of its options are found in $200 class reels. The workmanship on this reel makes it very appealing for its price. I have studied and compared this reel against several reels its senior and have put it on my wish list.

I think he was just joking.
. As I was just joking as well.

If you are still looking I have one of these and I love it. Usually can only get it online. The reel staff at Grapevine hadn't even seen one before.

Cheap, good (surprisingly) H2O Mettle at academy. I bought 10 on Black Friday, a few years ago for $25 each. I've not had a single problem with any of them. Just oil before first use.

I have them on different rods with 15-20 lb Flouro and up to 65-lb braid. But with the braid I can cast right down to the knot on the arbor so make a good knot.

whats the bass section say?

You are an ABU guy and you have to ask this question ?
ABU GARCIA BLACK MAX ....... $49 @ Wal Mart or Academy.
IMHO this is absolutely the best reel made for under $100.
I have 5 of them & a couple of them are 2&3 years old and still work flawlessly.
I use one on my 6'6" St Croix to throw weightless plastic and I can throw them a long ways with ease. I have every thing on them from 10# mono to 20# fluro + 50# braid. I like them just as much as my STX & Revo S.
I tried the H2O Mettle and wound up giving it away,,,,,,went back to the Black Max.

They have boxes and boxes of cheap Abu reels at southwest parts and service. Literally hundreds of reels. $20 ea, $30ea, $40ea. All from combos that had issues with the rods. All reels are nice, new condition. Did I say hundreds? Cheap?!!!!

Bass pro has the carbonite reel on sale for $80-ish dollars all of the time and that is a good reel. Academy typically will have a sale on Lew's and that will bring the price of some of those reels under $100. I would stay away from the Shimano Caenan, I have one and it does cast well but the power of the reel is bad when reeling in fish.

Spinning: Pflueger President. (I have a Pflueger Trion as a cheaper secondary and it's great/reliable/durable as well but definitely not as nice feeling as the President)

Baitcast: H20 Mettle.

Have em both. Love em both.

Promax reel from junked promax rod combos is a good score too. Killer reel, very similar to the blackmax but slighty nicer. I also LOVE my orra winch for cranking. It's the best casting reel I own. If you're an Abu guy (I am) buy whatever Abu has in your price range and you'll probably love it. Orra SX will be just as great for a general purpse reel (winch is LOW gear ratio 5:1)

Best bet is to get the Orra SX or Winch depending on use and what speed you need, they are a world ahead of the max line in terms of smoothness and performance. You can get into the revo line starting at $129 new as well, something to consider, though the orra will perform at the same level.
