Since last weeks trip was so successful I decided to give it another try today. Nothing is better fishing than the Brazos in North Texas IMO. Last week we put in at Dicks and paddled up stream a couple miles and back. Today we put in at the dam below Whitney and paddled down stream a little past Coon creek and back up. Its about a 5-6 mile total distance trip.

Today I had my step son with me. I take him out to Tyler state park sometimes and we have been to a couple other lakes but the fishing is never great and he gets bored easily. A few years ago I brought him out to the Brazos for his first fishing trip ever. He was 9 years old then and he caught a white bass on his first cast that day along with probably 20-30 white bass after that. Needless to say he thinks the Brazos is a magical place where fish jump onto your hook. Its almost true.

So we got to the dam this morning a little before 7. It was a cool 49 degrees with a fog rolling over the water.

We paddled a little down stream as the sun was rising above the trees.

I thought this would make for a nice silhouette picture.

This portion of the river has some steep rock formations that run along it.

On the way down I hooked a couple little bass like this one.

The coon creek area is a pretty neat place with a really nice cliff the runs along the left side of the river. We got out

and explored the rocks a bit.

So at around 10am we started to head back up river. We were supposed to be off the river by 1pm because we had stuff to do this evening. On the way back up I decided to really start fishing. Someone turned on the magic "make the fish jump on your hook" switch and it was on.

I caught several more bass. My step son caught several bass plus a few sunfish. We actually had to leave them biting.

I hooked into a huge one that had my drag spinning off the reel but I ended up loosing it. Last week I caught a 22" ~6 lbs fish and this one was every bit as big and maybe even bigger. I ended up catching a decent bass that went a couple pounds though.

One funny thing was they have these two buoys a little under a mile down from the dam. They say something like hazard on them and there are some large diameter pipes that run in the area. I figured it was so that boats dont run over the pipes. Well I was fishing the pipes and all of the sudden I hear this loud air release and the pipes shoot out a huge amount of bubbles that pushes the water about 2ft in the air. I almost pooped my pants! I ended up getting a picture of this crazy bubble area. I did pull a few fish from out under these pipes even after the bubbles incident.

So it was a successful day with lots of fish caught and my step son cant wait to go back. I cant wait either!

Nice trip, Dave. I'm sorry I bailed on you. I've felt pretty puny all day, and I'm not sure why. Maybe next weekend we do it again. Or go from the dam to Dick's! Now that would be a great trip! Looks like it might be 3 of us!

Cool post, man. Yeah, I was down a few weeks ago, and the same thing with pipes spewing water up out of the river happened to me too! Frightening in a kayak smile Those pipes hold a TON of fish. The water was so clear that day, I could see all of the structure down below, and it looked like the tank at Cabela's or something. Bass, sunfish, catfish, white bass all hanging out around there. I truly wished I'd had my waterproof camera that day because that clear green water was beautiful.
Oh, and the fishing was non-stop action too. Little ones all around, but still tons of fun.

Sunday might have to be a Brazos day for me. I miss it, and I've hit it at least once a month since spring.
If anyone is interested, maybe we can make a plan to meet up Sunday sometime.

Nice day! I wish I would've went today...I slaughtered em on Oct 16 caught a lot of 4 and 5 pound fish with a nice smallmouth. And you're right that stretch of the Brazos never disappoints!

It would work but you would have to pull the mirage drive out. Maybe even lave the mirage drive in the tuck.

Intake for the gas fired electricity plant that's right across from it. http://southerncompany.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=1551
