I asked this question to several mechanics about a year ago and they said that they see less Mercury's than any other motor. That was all I needed to hear to keep going Mercury. They have a great motor and it has been proven for many years. The Pro XS is the best out there in my opinion.

And you can get several mechanics to offer up their opinions somewhere else and get a completely different result. People get the answers they wan to hear for the most part, its just human nature. I too, wish more people would take pride and buy more American products. Even more than that, I wish the people who made those products took more pride in the products they produce. When I found out a few years back that a TOYOTA truck has more American original parts in it than a Dodge or Chevy and was closing in on Ford, I quit doing the whole "Buy American" thing. The "island" of America no longer exists.

Consider what dealers are around you. Also, if you can ride in a boat that has each of your preferred motors, you'd be able to decide easier. Personally, I like the SHO. It's quiet, performs well, and has everything you need in a motor.

I think the who will do the maintenance on the motor is the first question. Many great motors, but if a new boat you have to choose from a few vendors. I only had one to choose from Mercury, okay by me, it has been a good motor. And my mechanic can work on it.

Mercury parts are Chinese and Mexico. Yamaha is Japan which accepts tighter tolerances than any other country. This will get you to thinking. Yamaha has never flew their name on a Mercury. But in several years past certain Mercury engines where Yamaha. Hondas are great engines as we'll just not high output.

I just bought a new merc 250 pro xs. It is an absolute beast of a motor. I have it on a fully loaded heavy 03' ranger 521vx. From idle to pad (hole shot) is 3.1 seconds. I had it to 72.5 GPS mph. I am very pleased with my purchase.

Most Mercury's are built over sea's Manufacturing Locations Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, USA Jurez, Mexico Komagane, Japan (TMC joint venture) Petit-Rechain, Belgium St. Cloud, Florida, USA Suzhou, China I think that you might be able to say Assembled in USA but I doubt they are truly made in USA any more.

Have not had a Mercury yet that was not in shop. Not bad motors at all and I would own another I just get finicky ones...lol
My experience with Yamaha has been amazing. Can't tear one up.
Both are great. Find a good shop and buy what you like best.

Engine Comparisons: Mercury/Yamaha/Evinrude Might want to watch, then make your own decisions...... that kind of investment deserves looking at 'new' technologies.....looks to me like Evinrude has it down in power/fuel savings/maintenance/etc. but, like I said...for you to decide!

I ran a 250 Pro Xs for 6 years putting a lot of hours on it.. During the warranty stage I had the coils replaced, the trim motor replaced, the compressor replaced and the trim motor replaced again. Then I had the lower unit replaced. Also had my smart craft gauges replaced once, the second time at my expense... I currently run a 250 SHO. Up to this point it's had no issues... So my next boat will have a "........... Mercury on it... They get great mileage, look good, and haul [censored]... Just my 2 cents...
