I have a 2002 Ford F150 and it came with an after market cold air intake (AFE). While at idle and driving it makes a loud humming noise. It is really an annoying noise, is this just something I have deal with on a cold air intake?

Dumb question...

What is that and where is it?

Yes a loud hissing noise is normal with an open element style air filter.

Not really a hissing, more of a humming.

Intake noise is greatly increased with a CAI, that's part of why most people buy them. Likely completely normal condition. That said, the stock air box isn't costing you any power and going back to stock would fix your "problem" as that is why the stock air boxes are tuned the way they are (resonance) to control sound reflections and cut intake noise down. You can probably find someone with a stock one willing to pay you like $100 and trade their stock for your annoying aftermarket one too and not have to buy the more expensive OEM pieces

a humming noise is prob your IAC valve. its right on top with a 2 wire connector. towards the back. tap on it and see if it goes away. if it does, replace with a dealer part. HTH

when you remove the factory air intake, you remove the resonance chamber, which dampens this sound.... straight intake amplifies this sound....

he said it does this when running and idling, not the iac, that would cause a rough idle....

I doubt it would be the iac either. The cai kits eleminate the intake elbow which is where the silencer is located. I actually cut mine out when I did the Gott's mod which enlarges the intake opening on the factory airbox. With my 97 I didn't get the humm either or it is being drowned out by the dual exhaust but I also installed a tuner on mine and it is recomended if a cai or any intake mod is done. You can contact LKQ for a used or salvaged intake elbow and airbox along with the nozzle.

If you still wanting some performance upgrade and keep the oem look I recomend the Gott's Mod.

And for the silencer removal

http://www.fordf150.net/howto/airintake.php

I would recomend a tuner also. I have a Gryphon which is a reworked Edge tuner that they don't do for that old of model 97-03's but there are others that are available. That is unless you want to go back to factory.

Well I called AFE (the maker of my intake)....
They suggested two things
1. Clean the filter (done)
2. Install the throttle body spacer (which is on there currently)

I started the truck without the filter on and no humming noise. Put the filter on and there's my noise. So maybe try another filter?

all open element air filters are going to make this noise in the configuration you have, your ONLY option is to re-install the factory air intake...............................................

Well good news.... I took my truck to kwik kar of Keller... They said it was the Idle Air Control Valve too... What the heck, I go across the street to O'Reilys and buy one for $46.00. It takes the technician there 5 minutes to swap them out. No more humming noise woot woot woot woot clap clap clap clap

My hats off to Kwik Kar of Keller thumb thumb

So go see Rip Banya (TFF member) he's the shop manager.
