Was walking in Breckenridge Park today and walked past where we used to hold our monthly meetings and it reminded me of the good times we had there. Took me back to the Times of the Texas Warmwater Flyfishing group and TFR. Most thoughts were about everyone that used to come that seem to have disappeared (myself included) with time and that got me to wondering where they all are. Guess that will be one of those unanswered questions in the same category as why is the sky blue.

Saw something on the net about a Danish fly casting obstacle game. Read about it and thought hell, we invented that. Oh well.

I learned a lot at those meetings. We had started discussing shooting heads and running lines and sinking line casting when it seems it all vanished into thin air. That was also the point in time I took that job in Afghanistan.

That obstacle course was the best. I have one now that I put together from black PVC tubing. The one I have the most fun with is the 24 inch hoop mounted on a pole that I practice casting the fly line loop through. Putting a back-cast loop through that target at 25 feet is fun, but it takes practice.

I can remember some of the guys casting for distance and hitting 100 feet. About the best I could ever do is about 80.

The burgers Pearow made were great. I know some of the guys used to go sand bass fishing after the meetings.

Then there was Ol' Al. It was always great when he could join us. Good times. Great people. Wonderful memories.

Thanks for the blast from the past!

JR

Well this post is definately a blast from the past. You're right, a lot of folks have just disappeared...

Hey Roger, have you thought about resurrecting the monthly sessions?

No Rex, they were good times but I think the idea of the group had run its course and it was time to abandon it. Crappy management too. Also around 3 years ago a few of us got together and created a new flyfishing group that keeps everyone pretty active with what we've got going on.

Besides, it seems to me you're doing a good job with what you're doing.

those were good times; Al Crist would make a 2 hour drive to teach us casting skills and didn't charge a dime; wouldn't take any money as I remember. Roger was the kingpin; the innovator who got it all going and kept it as such. I remember ole Al just shaking his head in disgust trying unsuccessfully to improve my back cast. Made some great friends; we had some nice outings together; Purtis, Dangerfield, Fairfield, Puluxy, brazos, and others I've forgotten. Those were the days-p-

I understand completely. Actually, I'm impressed with how long you kept it going. Everything I'm doing is a lot less ambitious than what you were doing.

The casting is the easy part, but the management side is not as much fun...
