I generally run line through the middle of my spools if they have holes in them. This is just the backing line (mono). Then tie my fluorocarbon to the mono, etc.. Someone told me you should never do this because the holes in the spool aren't deburred and can cut/damage the line. However, I can't recall ever getting to the end of my spool. Thoughts?

I'm thinking, if your line gets short/low enough to where the knot getting cut is even an issue, you have too little line on the spool anyway. I wouldn't think it should be a factor, but I'm no expert.

I have had it happen on my 50 MG's where I can typically cast all the line off a spool.

I don't tie through it. If you do, when you cinch the line down you can feel the damage from the edge. this is just on my Shimano's 50 Mg where I can cast the whole spool out, so others may be different, but why chance it.

I just run the line threw the middle and start spoiling it up. I don't tie them .

Absolutly makes spooling faster to not have to tie a knot around spool & trim off tag end. Black bass only "spool you" in your dreams. Does not matter if the spool cuts the line as long as it will hold the end just long enough for me to start spooling.

I always run it through.
run it through then tie, then spin the spool a few times and tie a 2nd knot. 2nd not is the first contact and gets more stretch. I don't recall ever having any issues with breakage.

I agree, I always ran it through. I guess I will keep doing it. I have never had an issue.

Arbor knots work great.

I tie it around the spool. Never had an issue and don't re-spool enough to learn a more efficient method.

I have gotten down to the end of the spool before and would've lost lures if I hadn't tied the line to the spool.

I tie an arbor knot around the spool, and have gone down to the knot on occasion. Never know when you might need to get deeper, or cast farther, and have taken too much line off throughout the day. It happens. Wouldn't want a frustrating situation to get worse when I'm spooled and snap off line. I don't know why you'd do anything other than the way it should be done anyways? Are you frequently respooling during tournament hours and need to save time somehow from tying it the proper way? The questions you guys find to come up with when you aren't out fishin' amaze me! roflmao fish

Same here, I just loop the line around the spool and tie a few overhand knots.

here is something to consider, does the spool spin over the shaft ? If you pass line through it will it interfere with the spool spinning ? not sure of reels other than revo's and Daiwa's...I have some old Diawa's that have a hole through the middle of the spool that was great for tying off, but now I tie a granny knot and synch it down cause like said I never get near the spool, I'm a fresh line junky - it's the only thing connecting me to the fish, mono is cheap and floro with a kink is worthless and braid gets a backing so keep 'em full !...
