Lost a 50+ pound blue at the side of the kayak today. Way, way bigger than my previous best. Decided to keep this one and had the chain ready. Tried to lip him to open his mouth to clip him. He wasn't ready. Shook his head, turned and snapped the leader (30 lb Big Game, I know not enough).
Any tips on getting one chained? I don't think there's a net that would have held him. He looked 5 feet long. Gaf? Gill him?

Gaff will work if you plan on cleaning one that big. They make landing nets plenty big for cats in excess of 100 pounds. Most kayakers I know, use the TC fish grips...

I know that a lot of guys really like to wear out the fish before attempting anything involving getting a big cat into a kayak. I haven't personally had a fish that big, but lots of guys recommend loosening the drag quite a bit and maybe just thumbing the spool when the fish gets really close. May give Chrstian Myrick a pm about how he does it, I remember reading a post of his about this a long time ago.

I don't fish from a kayak but usually bring them in the boat with my tc grips. Most of the time I don't even have a net with me anymore.

Make sure you get the fight out of em before using the plastic fish grips...one spin from a big blue and they will snap! Had a 50 pounder break a pair just last weekend! The metal ones that spin with the fish are a much better design!
I'm gonna miss her....

I was born with a fish grip on the end of each arm. Put a glove on, grab him in the mouth and pull him in the boat.
