My dog knows what is about to happen when he sees the fishing gear come out of our spare bedroom... He gets all fired up...lol It is actually sad when I am not bringing him out, lol I feel like I am ditching him. Most of the time while we are out there he just lays there and watches what's going on around us while he catches some sun rays. But he does get excited when we get a bite... especially if it is a topwater strike! He also likes to sniff each fish before we toss it back... lol

My Fishing Buddy is a rescue Jack Russell / Min. Poodle , never complains , no cell phone , brings her own snacks , does not tell long boring stories , loves all the lakes I pick , always ready to go , doesn't mind staying all day , never tears up my equipment , does not smoke or drink best partner besides my brother .

Animal lovers represent all that is good in man. A man that will take and share his experience his time on the lake (especially if they take the time and trouble/expense to put a life jacket on them) is a very good person. This thread is wonderful. Thanks for the many postings. I have two dogs at our home but, my wife insists they do NOT go on the boat (one is an adopted stray American Foxhound - we think) and our other is a much older toy or miniature Schnauzer. Would love to have one that would fish with me but, we recently lost our little male Schnauzer and we have both decided we do not want to go through that pain of loss again. It is just too hard. God Bless

Lee, don't think of the pain of loss. Think of the joy of rescuing the dog. There are too many in the animal shelters/city dog pounds for them all to be saved. Save another one and let this one be your designated fishing buddy. I've lived alone for 12 years now and just recently rescued Harley. He just loves the boat and he makes my trips much more enjoyable for me. I live in a rural area and always (daily) fish alone so Harley has been just right for me.

A couple of years ago, on Lake Worth,I talked to a man with his "fishing cat" standing on the bow like a dog does. He said when he starts walking toward his boat dock, the cat runs ahead and jumps in the boat. Said she loves to go out on the water. Not something you see every day!
In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

I can relate Lee. We lost our Golden Retriever and he was a member of the family. It was really tough having my buddy pass on early and I didn't think we would ever get over it. But alas..... It was time to move on. Life is short. So here comes Remy. He doesn't know the rules of the boat yet so his fishing trips have been brief. I don't want to relive the grub hooked under the tongue incident. He's going to make a great fishing buddy when the Texas weather permits.

Here's Abby. She went with me almost every trip. She is waiting for me on the other side to go fishing again some day.

Men, I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your 'buddy' and 'fishing partners. Remy is a handsome rascal. As for Abby, she is a beauty. I have a toy schnauzer that I took in when she was quite young. Older now, I just can't take her out in the boat. For now we have her health problems under control but, it won't be many more days. I hope years but she is now going on 12 and she has a cancer in her mouth. Ya'll are really good folks and thanks for sharing. Having a dog for a buddy and fishing partner says VOLUMES for ya'll! They are wonderful, giving their love totally unconditionally and bring so much joy

We have a Lab and a Chihuahua and the only trouble we have is tripping over the lab because she love to help get the fish but just like the other reader said common sense when hot to let them get out or go for a dip

I have a mini schnauzer and have had him out on the boat several times. I caught a crappie one time that came off the hook in the bottom of the boat, and Mav went to investigate this flopping fish. He got a little close and it tail slapped him. Needless to say he stays in the seat usually and wants nothing to do with the fish now.

If we concentrated on the really important stuff in life,
there'd be a shortage of fishing poles

Breed matters not. A good bass boat dog is one that will go on point. A great bass boat dog is one that only points lunkers. If you can find and train me a great bass boat dog, I'll have me a boat partner!
