I'm pretty sure PINS is just short for Padre Island Nations Seashore. I'm really not sure what area they are talking about. But that is my best bet on what they are talking about.

Man do all of yall really not know where pins is? Just stay on the main road to the island and do not get off. After about 10 minutes past bob hall pier you will run into a ranger station. That is the National Park area. Its $10 after 6:30 am. After you pass station stay on the same road and it will take you all the way down to the beach. This is PINS. The first stretch is Malaquite, then you will get to a section called little shell, followed by big shell. If you drive far enough you will end up at the port mansfield jetties. Thats as far as you can go. PS there is only one academy in corpus and they sell fish bites though I would never use something like that.

I caught a small one in the middle of the night Thanksgiving morning from the Flagship hotel on Galveston Island. My first ever. It tasted delicious.
Caught many sand trout and silver perch, a whiting, and a stingray. They hit about 3:30am after everyone left the pier. The wind died down and the water was glass still. There were hundreds of small silver eels chasing minnows and small shrimp. I foul-hooked one. I saw several large ones hovering below the water's surface. They wouldn't hit my dead shrimp though.

PS When I said stay on the main road, when talking about going to PiNS, I mean heading south past whitecap and the last two circle k's. Do not turn left at the first light, this will take you to the packery, mustang, and eventualy Port Aransas. For pins you have to be going south like your heading towards south padre, except you will be on padre driving along the beach. If you know where bird island boat ramp is then that same road leads you down to the beach front which is PINS.

TXNANgler, The small eels that you talk of were probably ribbon fish. If you are ever bored and want to catch a few, put on a panther martin or mepps and you will slaughter them. They have big teeth, be careful.

PiePucher, I know. I used the catch huge ones when I was a kid down at the Freeport Harbor when my Dad took me to work with him. As a kid, I was always afraid to unhook them by myself, but since my dad left me at the end of the docks by myself, I eventually got over it. (Now for those huge warf rats! Those things scared the hell out of me every time they'd run across the docks showing their teeth... they'd actually snarl at you. I believe they were some kind of imported rodent escaped off the ships. Scary as hell for a kid!)
The big silver eels fight as good as a 5 pound stingray. They can really stick to the bottom. I always caught them on live shrimp. They never hit dead shrimp. I used artificials very rarely as a kid and never caught any with them. I bet they can really tear up a lure with those nasty teeth!
Actually, they're called cutlass fish. I used to keep a bunch of them and freeze them for when my dad took me offshore to catch kingfish and snapper. Cool ol' days!

True. Most folks down where I grew up called them silver eels. I've never heard anyone call them cutlass fish, but that's what most of the "official" sources I read refer to them as. I hear most TV shows and articles nowadays referring to them as ribbonfish... I think this term comes from the Florida area and has caught on everywhere else... lots of saltwater shows filmed there.
P.S. Sorry for misspelling your name above... it was a simple typo. no malice intended.

Yea, dont want to make Punch mad. Dont you know he's "Loco" man? Some poor fool misspelled his name a while back and no one has heard from him since. I think his name was "Trout-killer". By the way, am I the only one that noticed batman puttin it on Ms. Spears at the top of the thread. Now that is pretty sick.

Nice!!!! Good eats. Nice fish. You catching any bigger than that? 3lbs? 4? How many a day are you catching? The whiting were so thick while I was down that I couldnt help but play with all the trout, smacks, jacks, and blues.(whiting would hit bait right when it hit the water, not allowing any pomp to have a shot.) I caught numerous whiting on jerkbaits and my buddy cleaned his skunk with a whiting on a jerkbait. WILD. Nice fish and if you dont mind, keep posting pics as you catch them. Thanks for sharing.
